A predator teacher who abused a student over more than a year at an inner-suburban high school is now in custody.

Bevan Wilson, 71, who also goes by Bevin, was granted bail on Thursday to live with a family member, but by the end of the day that offer had fallen through.

Wilson had previously been staying, in breach of his bail, at the Gawler Gateway Tourist Park, a fact which only came to light during Thursday’s hearing.

Wilson was supposed to be bailed to an assisted living facility. But on Thursday it was revealed that instead, and without permission of the court, he had moved into the park.

During the hearing, the court heard that an old bail variation to allow Wilson to live at the tourist park had never been approved.

Patrick Hill, prosecuting, on hearing that Wilson was living in the tourist park said he was strongly opposed to allowing the convicted child sex offender to remain in housing near children.

On Friday morning Emily Cousins, for Wilson, told the court she did not have another bail address to put forward for her client.

Judge Jane Schammer revoked Wilson’s bail and ordered he be held in custody until at least October when he will appear again in court for sentencing submissions.

Wilson was found guilty of the persistent sexual abuse of a child following a trial before Judge Schammer.

His crimes begun in the art room of an inner suburban high school.

The abuse continued for more than a year, with Wilson leaving his job as a teacher but ingratiating himself into the victim’s family.

Years later, Wilson’s victim threatened him with a knife and made him confess over the phone to the victim’s father that he had abused him as a child.

Wilson was briefly employed by Flinders University as a casual lecturer and tutor. He was known around campus for his flamboyant clothing.

His employment ended with the university before he was charged with the offending against the student.

Wilson has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, which has rapidly deteriorated.

Since his trial his ability to walk has noticeably decreased.

Wilson used a walker to leave court as he was led into custody.
