A friend of the woman hit by a ute and killed on Port Rd overnight has paid tribute to their friend.

Road crash survivor on why he shows his scars

A 71-year-old Queenstown woman, identified as Jennifer, who was struck by a car on Saturday night has been remembered as “one of a kind” by loved ones.

Emergency services rushed to Port Rd in Queenstown just after 9.30pm but they were unable to save the pedestrian, who died at the scene.

The woman had been visiting friends just before she was struck by the ute.

Chris, a friend who asked to be identified by his first name, said he offered to call her a taxi just before she left and tried to cross Port Rd.

Neighbours who came out following the crash said they heard a man at a nearby bus stop had been trying to alert cars to stop before the collision.

A Port Rd resident, Kylie, said she heard cars “beeping and carrying on” between 9-9.30pm and then a bang.

Kylie said when she came out to see what was happening she saw a figure lying on the road.

“Her face was … downwards and it didn’t look good from where I was standing,” she said.

Kylie said her partner checked the woman’s pulse and she found her ID and tried to reassure her, telling her “you’re not by yourself”.

“I don’t know if she could hear us at that stage,” she said.

A 34-year-old North Haven man behind the wheel of the Mitsubishi ute was not physically hurt in the collision.

Police have not charged him.

Kylie said the man was with his partner and small child and appeared to be “in shock”.

The ute was towed from the scene for forensic examination.

Flowers have since been placed at the scene as a tribute to Jennifer, who friends described as a caring person.

Chris said Jennifer had “a heart of gold”.

Tiana Wilson, who described Jennifer as her adopted grandmother, said she was a bright, bubbly and loving woman.

“She was one of a kind,” she said.

“Even though she was 71, it’s like she was 25 at heart.”

Ms Wilson said Jennifer had recently been battling cancer.

Jennifer is the 78th person to be killed on South Australian roads this year.

Restrictions were placed around Port Rd for several hours while Major Crash investigators examined the scene.

Anyone who witnessed this incident or has dashcam footage that could assist the investigation is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestopperssa.com.au.
