A man who was allegedly involved in the stabbing motivated by a “complicated” relationship connection claimed he “knew nothing” about it – and both accused just wanted to go home to their kids.

On Monday, Benjamin Clifton, 29 and Paul Chapman, 33 both faced the Elizabeth Magistrates Court after their arrest on Sunday.

Counsel for Mr Clifton, of Salisbury North, submitted to the court that neither she nor her client were “aware of any stabbing”.

“On my client’s instructions your honour, I know nothing about a stabbing and we did not know the alleged victim had been stabbed,” counsel for Mr Clifton said.

During their application for bail, Magistrate Elizabeth Ferris said from the facts of charge filed by police prosecution, there was “some motive” to the stabbing relating to a “complicated” relationship.

“The allegations are that (Mr Clifton) and Mr Chapman attended the premises, there appears to have been some motive in relation to a relationship that the co-accused had been in with the victim’s brother’s partner – or something similarly complicated,” Magistrate Ferris said.

The court heard the victim’s brother had previously been in a relationship with Mr Clifton’s current girlfriend.

The Advertiser revealed the alleged victim of the stabbing that occurred on Saturday was 37-year-old Anthony Davidson.

Mr Davidson, a scaffolder, was rushed to hospital from the front yard of his Quadrant Ave home with serious injuries from four separate stab wounds following the alleged attack.

His injuries were assessed as non-life-threatening, with a relative sharing an image of him recovering in hospital with The Advertiser.

Both men are yet to enter a plea to one count of causing serious harm with intent.

The court heard a partial finger print that matched Mr Chapman was located on the fence at the property, and in an interview with police, put himself and Mr Clifton together around the time of the alleged offending.

During applications for both men the court heard they were fathers and didn’t want to be away from their children.

The court heard Mr Chapman’s child receives NDIS funding and could be without Centrelink support if his father was incarcerated.

Counsel for Mr Chapman, of Parafield Gardens, had been “trying to turn his life around”.

The court heard Mr Clifton had recently begun having regular contact with his two children after being estranged for two years.

Magistrate Ferris denied bail for both of the men, as Mr Davidson’s safety and that of the prosecution witnesses needed to be protected.

Both men were remanded in custody to face the Adelaide Magistrates Court in August.

Mr Davidson is in a stable condition and was expected to have surgery for the wound on his back on Sunday.
