A girl, 14, charged with 35 terrorism offences will likely plead guilty to two, in a deal brokered with prosecutors, after all parties watch a video found on her computer, a court has heard.
On Wednesday, prosecutors and counsel for the girl – who cannot be identified – asked the Youth Court to postpone her case one final time, saying it was likely to resolve.
Counsel for the girl said her office had “sent a proposal” to prosecutors, and had in turn “received a counter-proposal”.
“Our only issue is one count relating to a video … we do not believe that the proposed offence is made out (by the evidence),” she said.
“All of the remaining counts will be consolidated into one count, and we believe there’s a possibility this could resolve on the next occasion.”
The girl was arrested in March 2023, following an investigation, and charged with possessing explosive instructions and 19 counts of possessing extremist material.
Prosecutors alleged the material “directly or indirectly encourages, glorifies, promotes or condones terrorist acts, or seeks support for, or justifies the carrying out of terrorist acts”.
A month later, the girl was charged with a further 15 counts of possessing extremist material following a search of her laptop and electronic devices.
On Wednesday, a police prosecutor said consolidation of the girl’s charges “was still on the cards” pending further discussion about the video.
“I believe (resolving that) will require defence and prosecution to sit in the same room and watch the video together,” she said.
Magistrate Kate Hodder remanded the girl on continuing bail to face court again in three weeks.
