Adelaide girl, 14, has 15 more charges laid against her after police search house, laptop

Police have laid 15 more charges on a 14-year-old Adelaide girl after they searched her address and allegedly found extremist videos on a laptop.

Teen Girl on Terror Charges Leaves Court

A court has heard a 14-year-old Adelaide girl has had a further 15 charges laid against her, after police searched her address and located a laptop with 15 videos of extremist material.

At her last appearance, prosecution raised an application to vary the youth’s bail – a condition that would permit police to “assess, seize and review any electronic device held – or suspected of being used” – by the teen.

Prosecution told Magistrate Kathryn Hodder today in court that the application came as a result of a “change of circumstances”.

“On that occasion (last appearance), she was charged with five counts – one count of possession of explosive instructions and four counts of possession of extremist material. Those counts related to a review of a mobile phone that was provided to police by the youth’s family,” they said.

“What has then flowed from there, Your Honour, is that police have conducted a search of the youth’s home address. They’ve located a laptop, a review has been undertaken on that device, and a further 15 charges have been laid as a result of 15 videos that were found on the laptop.

“That is the first submission that I made, Your Honour, in terms of a change in circumstance in that rather than (the youth) facing five charges, we’re now up to 20.

“I’ve been provided with material from the assisting officers who indicate that the material which has been received by them indicates that (the youth) was undertaking discussion with a close friend of hers in relation to matters of Islamic state and jihad. That has caused police some concern in relation to the nature of the conversation and the topics being discussed.”

South Australian terror cops arrested the southern suburbs girl in mid March after she was alleged to have been in possession of explosive instructions and extremist material.

During her first court appearance in front of Magistrate Tracee Micallef earlier this month, members of the media were excluded from the hearing after defence counsel, Andrew Williams, said his client’s welfare needed to be protected.

“This is a very young girl,” Mr Williams said.

“This needs to be handled delicately and privately.”

Today, Magistrate Hodder denied prosecution’s application to vary the existing bail condition due to the proposal not being “appropriate”.

The matter was adjourned until June for disclosure, negotiations and instructions.
