They all played for different teams in the NRL across different eras but these top rugby league players have one thing in common - the jersey they wore as schoolboys.

Aaron Woods, Mitch Moses, Paul Sironen, Luke Brooks, Ben Elias, Chris Anderson, David Gower and Curtis Sironen are some of the bigger names to have honed their talent at Holy Cross College, Ryde.

SCHOOLS CUP: How to watch, schools, match times

The school, which has an academic focus, has still been a production house for top rugby league talent in the past and looks to be continuing the tradition in the future.

And while their first game of the competition against Hunter Sports was a forfeit due to coronavirus, players from Holy Cross will get to show their wares in the quarterfinals of the competition against Hills Sports High today.

Parramatta Eels gun Moses, a nephew of Elias, and old school mate Brooks, now with the Tigers, are playing proof of the program at the college and the importance of schools rugby league and its role in preparing young talent for the NRL.

“There are a few (former students) in the NRL now like Mitch, Luke, Esan Marsters, Curtis and Junior Tatola from Souths, all current guys doing well,’’ said Tim White, Holy Cross sport co-ordinator and coach.

“Most of them come back. Mitchell and Luke present awards, come back for coaching sessions, they all stay in contact.

“It shows the amount of respect and esteem they have for the school.

“We have a very strong culture there. We are one of the original schools since the start of the competition and the school has been playing league since 1911.’’

Border restrictions mean this year NSW and Queensland schools play in separate events.

Schools have close ties with different rugby league clubs with Holy Cross close with the West Tigers and Manly Warringah Sea Eagles.
