NRL Schoolboy Cup: St Edwards steal win over Farrer MAHS

FARRER MAHS VS ST EDWARD’S PREVIEW

By Amanda Lulham

St Edward’s College has never faced any of the teams in the NRL Schoolboy Cup and some players have yet to run out in a game of rugby league this year.

But James Maloney’s old school is relishing the chance to play in the famous competition after being invited to compete in the COVID-delayed and altered Schoolboy Cup starting Wednesday.

Coach Jason Carpenter said his team has one goal in the knockout competitions – to put on a good show.

“It’s a bit of an unknown but it’s an opportunity to play sport and they can’t wait,” said Carpenter ahead of the game against Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School in Tamworth being played on Wednesday at 10.30am behind closed doors due to coronavirus.

“We aren’t a sports school. We are just lucky we have 1100 boys. We don’t have special training, we just have quite a bit of depth.”

The school still has strong rugby league connections with the likes of Jacob and Daniel Saifiti, Connor Watson and Bradman Best with the Newcastle Knights and Tom Watson at the Canberra Raiders.

There are a number of players expected to make a mark for St Edward’s when the first game of the competition gets underway today.

“We have Sandon Smith who is a very good young half. He was in the under 18s 30 man NSW squad for Origin,” Carpenter said.

“Tyler Moriarty is a hooker. He has come through Harold Matt with the Roosters and is only 17. A very good player.

“He and Daniel (Peters) were co-captains of Harold Matthews’s last year

“Daniel Peters, he’s a backrower, second rower, centre, very robust, very good work rate, very hard to tackle, a really good student of the game.”

Farrer MAHS captain Mark Simon said he and his teammate were looking forward to the clash.

“We have heard they are strong and we haven’t played any football yet, just a trial match,” said Simon, whose team is coached by Tom Learoyd-Lahrs and Marty Moore.

“The boys are really looking forward to getting out there.”

“We got to the quarter-finals last year and beat Hills and then lost to Westfield in the semi-finals.

“It’s a goal to go better.”

Simon said his side are strong defensively with big forwards.
