Leni Newham regularly carb loads on the nights before a big swim meet — spaghetti and meatballs is her go to meal.
And it seemed to help the Barossa Swimming Club young gun on the weekend at the SA Country Championships.
Leni, 13, broke seven individual records at the three-day event at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre.
Every heat race and final was exclusively live streamed on The Advertiser website, following our live coverage of the state short course titles in September-October.
Leni, who took home 24 medals in total from the titles.
She broke records in the 50m freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke heat and final, as well as the 100m breaststroke.
She said her success was proof of hard working paying off.
“It means a lot,” Leni said.
“I swim five times a week and then I do four dryland based sessions.
“I eat lots of carbs before (meets) to refuel — spaghetti and meatballs is my favourite.”
Leni’s results helped her qualify for this year’s Australian Age Championships in April.
The St Francis de Sales College Year 8 student hopes to earn a berth on the national team for the junior world titles, while the Olympics remains her long-term goal.
Onkaparinga athlete Jordy Martin went one better, breaking eight records at the event.
He set new best times in the 50m backstroke and butterfly, 100m backstroke and butterfly, 200m freestyle and butterfly, the 400m individual medley and freestyle.
The 14-year-old also claimed 12 gold medals, five silver and seven bronze.
Jordy, who attends Rostrevor College, spent the first few months of last year in Queensland training with Bond University.
But when COVID-19 hit, the Mount Barker teenager decided to return home to SA.
Along with Leni, he was one of five simmers to qualify for the nationals.
In all, 64 SA country records and 13 team relay records were broken at the event, including 10 by Barossa.
A further 50 visitor records were also broken by interstate clubs.
Onkaparinga won the championship with 1695 points, followed by Barossa (1462) and Silver City (1269).
