When your dad is the head coach and you’re the boys senior team captain it’s pretty hard to skip swimming training, even when on holiday in Victoria over Christmas.
So while some of his competitors may have taken a few days off from the pool over the festive period, 14-year-old Keian Curthoys-Davies packed his bathers for the family trip to Swan Hill to prepare for this week’s SA Country Swimming Championships in Adelaide.
Every race from the three-day event will be live streamed online at advertiser.com.au, enabling those who can’t get to the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre to still catch all of the action.
It follows The Advertiser’s live coverage of the state short course titles in September-October.
Keian belongs to the Barossa Swimming Club, which will have up to 30 athletes competing against about 400 regional-based participants from Friday to Sunday.
His main events are the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke, while he also has high hopes of medalling in the 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley.
“We went to Victoria over Christmas and dad is the head coach, so we trained over there and the assistant coaches took the training sessions back at Tanunda,” Keian said.
“We trained at the Swan Hill Recreation Centre and had Christmas Day off, but got back into it on Boxing Day.
“Club-wise this is our biggest event for the year so we’re all looking forward to it and the live stream means grandparents or family who can’t get to the pool can still watch it and see how we’re going.
“Our last meet was a week before Christmas and I like swimming at Marion, all my PBs (personal bests) are set there, so when we go there we race hard.”
Barossa senior girls captain, Meg Wood, 15, is targeting the 50m and 100m butterfly and freestyle. She said motivation for training remained high over Christmas.
“It’s been good, we’ve been working towards the country champs for a while now,” she said.
“We’re slowly easing into technique and skills work now, before racing starts at the end of the week.
“It’s a good idea to live stream the meet, especially if not as many people are allowed into the venue because of COVID.”
The Advertiser will live stream all heats and finals from both the 9am and 5pm sessions daily.
