Now Jett and PJ Carlin are ready to forge their own path among SA’s most promising field athletes live on advertiser.com.au.
Jett is the state record holder in the under-16, under-18 and under-20 boys hammer throw.
Younger brother PJ meanwhile, has posted SA best marks in the under-14 and under-16 shot put.
The siblings will strut their stuff at this weekend’s Copyworld Toshiba South Australian Track and Field Championships, under the watchful eye of coach and dad, Paul Carlin.
All the action from the three-day event will be exclusively live streamed by The Advertiser in our most ambitious sports broadcast to date.
Two concurrent live streams will allow The Advertiser’s subscriber audience to switch between track and field events from the titles, with multiple camera angles capturing the state’s top athletes.
Experienced SA sports commentator John Nankivell, along with a range of special guests, will host the coverage, which kicks off on Friday at 6.30pm.
The live stream has been made possible thanks to the support of event sponsors Copyworld and Sportitude.
Jett said it was a prime opportunity to carry on his family’s winning tradition, three decades after his uncle, Sean Carlin, claimed victory at the 1990 and 1994 Commonwealth Games.
“My dad and uncle both went to the Commonwealth Games with hammer throw and my uncle won it twice, so the family history spurred me on to give it a go,” Jett, 17, said.
“I then had a bit of success, so I stuck with it.
“I am proud to hold the (state) records, but what I try to focus on is winning championships.
“My future goal is to make a Commonwealth Games and hopefully an Olympics one day.”
Jett said The Advertiser’s in-depth coverage will help competitors showcase their talents to a wider audience than usual.
The Year 12 Trinity College student was eyeing double success in the under-20 and open hammer throw, as he targets selection for April’s nationals.
“I would love to win both of the events I am in and extend my under-20 record if I can,” he said.
PJ, 15, said he had worked hard to improve in recent years, having fallen in love with athletics.
“I’ve been doing a lot of training with my brother, five days a week pretty much,” the Year 10 Trinity student said
“I do a lot of throwing and explosive work, like sprint training. I just try to keep it consistent.
“I love competing and it feels great to be the best in the state for my age group.
“It’s been a dream of mine to represent Australia in shot put and follow my dad and uncle’s footsteps.”
PJ, whose represents Northern Districts Athletics Club along with his brother, was confident of a strong showing this weekend.
“I am very excited,” he said.
“I can’t wait to see a few competitors from NSW as well.
“It’s a great idea to live stream the event and it’s great to see all the kids having fun, just doing athletics.”
The Advertiser’s day one live stream of the Copyworld Toshiba South Australian Track and Field Championships will run from 6.30pm-9pm on Friday.
Coverage will continue at noon on Saturday and 9am on Sunday.
