The wait is nearly over.
Five hundred and eighty days after Glenelg beat Port Adelaide in a league grand final for the first time since 1934, the two proud clubs will meet in a premiership decider rematch at the Bay on Saturday night.
And it’s just the first leg of an SANFL Anzac Round double-header, culminating in The Advertiser’s live stream of Sunday’s Woodville-West Torrens and North Adelaide clash – a repeat of last year’s grand final.
“It feels a bit odd, strange, to be honest, because it’s been 18 months since we played in a grand final,’’ Magpies coach Matthew Lokan said.
“But Port and Glenelg are traditional rivals and it’s great to be a part of the Anzac Day weekend.
“It’s a huge game for us and our supporters and we are playing for the Bob Quinn Medal.
“Bob is obviously a great of our club and South Australian football, so to be able to play in a game which recognises him is huge.’’
Originally scheduled for last year, the 2019 grand final Anzac Day rematch did not take place because of the delayed start to the SANFL season and ultimately Port’s withdrawal from the competition because of COVID-19 restrictions.
Now, in a historic move, the SANFL will hold two grand final rematches on Anzac Round, with last year’s premier, the Eagles, meeting the team they beat in the 2020 decider, the Roosters.

They will renew their fierce rivalry at Woodville Oval at 2.10pm on Sunday, in one of three encounters broadcast live on advertiser.com.au this weekend.
The Bob Quinn Medal – named after the late South Australian Football Hall of Fame inductee, Port great and decorated World War II legend – will be presented to the player adjudged best on ground at the end of both matches.
Glenelg, which beat the Magpies by 28 points in the 2019 grand final, has started its centenary season on fire, winning its first three games under new coach Brett Hand.
He described his first experience as coach against the Bays’ fiercest rival as “exciting;'’.
“It was unfortunate Glenelg couldn’t play against Port last year but to be able to recognise the achievements of Glenelg in 2019, on Anzac weekend this year, is fantastic,’’ he said.
“We’re proud to be involved and adding to what is a special week for the club is that we’re also commemorating our 100-year history.’’
The SANFL’s traditional Anzac Day grand final rematch dates back to 1948.
While the Tigers and Magpies will renew their rivalry for the first time since September 22, 2019, the Roosters will be keen to exact some revenge on the Eagles for losing last year’s grand final by 39 points.
Both teams are among the favourites for this year’s flag.
“This year is a totally new season, so we’re taking every game as it comes, but it’s a really special weekend to be able to play on and one we feel very privileged to be a part of,’’ North coach Jacob Surjan said.
“We’re looking forward to the contest because it’s going to be a good one.’’
Eagles coach Jade Sheedy said his side was excited to host an Anzac Day match.
“It’s a great tradition by the SANFL to have the grand final teams play on such a special day, it means a lot to our footy club, and we’re really looking forward to the challenge against a good side,’’ he said.
The live footy action on The Advertiser website begins on Saturday, as we broadcast the women’s match between Glenelg and South Adelaide from 4.10pm.
The Tigers also take on the Panthers in the SANFL under-16 grand final, which will be live streamed on advertiser.com.au from 11am on Sunday.
