Adelaide may be the hub of hockey in South Australia, but for these country athletes there is nothing quite the same as representing where you’re from.
Regional pride will be on the line when 14 teams go head-to-head for the title at the Hockey SA State Country Championships this Saturday and Sunday.

Men’s and women’s sides from seven regions – Port Lincoln, Lower South East, Yorke Peninsula, Whyalla, Barossa Valley, Riverland and Port Pirie – will take part in the tournament at the State Hockey Centre at Gepps Cross.
And 12 selected games will be exclusively live streamed on advertiser.com.au (see fixtures below).
Every region’s men’s and women’s sides will feature in at least one match during our coverage, along with both grand finals.
Jessica Strawbridge was excited to follow in the footsteps of her father Kym and pull on the Whyalla colours for the first time.
The Port Adelaide Hockey Club midfielder played juniors in the Steel City and will be taking part in the country championships for the first time.
“Dad’s played state hockey most of his life and represented Whyalla every occasion that he could, so it runs in the blood that’s for sure,” Strawbridge said.
“Country hockey’s all about the love of the game and getting the opportunity to play against different teams.
“It’s a real highlight on the calendar for a lot of people.”
Barossa women’s coach Jordan Rhind, who will also take to the pitch for the men’s side, said the chance for players to represent their regions was a great opportunity for both country and metro-based competitors.
“I’m really looking forward to it, I quite enjoy getting out playing and coaching in the country championships,” the Nuriootpa striker said.
“It’s great to get all the country associations together and have something to play for at senior level.
“And live streaming the games is fantastic to give country people a chance to watch because many can’t travel to make the games.”
Barossa men’s coach Martin Gallasch agreed and said association hockey was particularly important for young country players.
“For us this year it’s a bit of a changing of the guard with some good, solid veterans involved but some younger blokes getting an opportunity,” Gallasch said.
“Giving the young men and women a crack at it is something we really look forward to doing in the Barossa.”
Live streamed matches will begin from 4pm Saturday and 9.30am Sunday, before the men’s and women’s gold medal matches later that afternoon.
