For a town seven hours from Adelaide, Port Lincoln is punching above its weight when it comes to hockey.
Representing the Eyre Peninsula successfully will be high on the agenda, when men’s and women’s teams from the seafood capital travel to the city for the Hockey SA State Country Championships this weekend.

Port Lincoln will be one of seven regional areas competing in the tournament on Saturday and Sunday at the State Hockey Centre at Gepps Cross.
And the pick of the action will be exclusively live streamed across 12 selected games on advertiser.com.au (see fixtures below).
Every region’s men’s and women’s sides will feature in at least one match during our coverage, along with both grand finals.
The Lower South East, Yorke Peninsula, Whyalla, Barossa Valley, Riverland and Port Pirie are also set to compete at the tournament.
National country representative Jim Stockham said the Port Lincoln men had a youthful and exciting line up this year.
The Wanderers Hockey Club centre half said the town’s strong hockey culture was the reason it produced quality young players.
“The talent we produce is unbelievable, I think,” Stockham, 34, said.
“We produce young guns, male and female.
“I put it down to our solid sporting culture and the supportive atmosphere that the Port Lincoln Hockey Association delivers.
“Being further away than the other regions, we don’t always get access to that higher level of hockey.
“That’s why it’s important for our young players to get over to Adelaide because if you don’t see it, you don’t know it.”
Marauders Hockey Club midfielder Tash Hammond, who has also played at Australian country level, said the women’s team had a chance to go all the way at the exciting live streamed event.
“We usually get close – this year I think we can make the grand final and hopefully will be able to win it,” Hammond, 22 said.
“(Live streaming) is the best thing that could possibly happen.
“Being seven hours away, not everyone can afford to come away … but also just for family members and the young juniors to be able to watch.
“It’s great Hockey SA continues to allow the championships to happen. It’s really important to keep giving the country areas something they can work towards at a higher level.”
Hammond said Ash Dyer and Olivia Watson-Dupille would be the Port Lincoln women’s players to watch at the championships.
She also expected young gun Bryce Hammond, her brother, to make an impact.
Bryce is fresh off starring for SA’s under-15 boys at the national championships last month.
