It came despite the Bloods holding the reigning premiers goalless in the second and third quarters in a stout defensive display, but the hosts could not capatalise at the other end with just one major of their own.

West now has one win and five losses following a start to the season which has been heavily impacted by Covid and injuries.

PREVIEW: TIGERS OUT TO TAME BLOODS AGAIN

Glenelg coach Jason Fairall has warned his side cannot take a revived West Adelaide lightly ahead of the SANFLW grand final rematch on Friday night.

And Bloods coach Mark Moody agrees.

The Tigers will travel to Richmond on Friday night to take on West under lights, with all the action live streamed on The Advertiser website from 8pm.

Reigning premiers Glenelg – holding second spot and a 4-1 win-loss record – has fared significantly better than the 1-4 Bloods, who have battled Covid omissions and injuries more than most to start the season.

“We’re preparing for them to be pretty strong and won’t be taking them lightly,” Fairall said.

“Everyone is going to be hit with that (Covid impact) at some point this season and it will come down to how you manage it and you need a bit of luck in this game too.

“Friday night isn’t a grand final rematch in our eyes, it’s a game against West Adelaide, and if we do everything we need to do we’ll be another step towards our goal.”

Moody said it had been difficult for the Bloods to find any consistency so far after being regularly faced with forced changes to their line up, including nine last round and six the week before.

“We’ll get some players back – we’ve been decimated with Covid and some injuries – but all going to plan it will be our first opportunity this season to have a squad that’s close to our peak,” Moody said.

“We can’t change history that they’re the premiers and we ran second.

“The season isn’t written off at all and we can be dangerous. We’ll be the underdogs for the next seven weeks and anyone who takes us lightly could come off second best.”

West and Glenelg will clash from 8pm on Friday night.

GRAND FINAL REMATCH TOP PLAYERS TO WATCH

GLENELG

SARAH GOODWIN

If Glenelg is to go back-to-back this year then Goodwin will be a key part of it.

The talented outside runner is averaging 20.8 touches per game as she pushes for selection at this year’s AFLW draft.

“She’s had an amazing season so far – she was pretty solid last year – but she’s come back with a lot more confidence, understands the competition and didn’t miss a beat in the pre-season,” Fairall said.

Goodwin has been named in the Tigers’ best in four of five games this campaign.

MATILDA SCHOLZ

Rookie ruck Scholz has made a quick impression in her first SANFLW season, leading the league for hit outs with 24.6 per game.

“Matilda has a bit going on with the state under-18 program at the moment so we’re trying to manage her game time as best we can so she’s still remaining fresh at the back end of the season,” Fairall said.

“We probably haven’t seen the best of her yet.”

JESSICA BATES

The league leader for tackles (10 per game), disposals (21.8) and ranking points (104.6), Glenelg midfielder Bates has taken her breakout 2021 form up a notch in 2022.

“She’s had a better start than she did last year and has been a huge performer for us,” Fairall said.

Bates’ campaign started with a hard-nosed 23-disposal performance in round one where she recorded a staggering 19 tackles against Norwood.

ELLIE KELLOCK

Kellock, who last month became the first Glenelg player to register 50 SANFLW games, has been a consistent force for her side to begin the season.

The 24-year-old’s leadership has been invaluable yet again this campaign, according to Fairall.

CAITLYN SWANSON

Following on from an impressive 18-disposal, four-goal performance in round four, Swanson ranks second in the league for majors.

Fairall said her good work, which includes goals in every match so far this season, was part of a well-oiled Tigers attack.

“Our forward line is functioning quite well at the moment and Caitlyn’s been the beneficiary of goals up there and she’s certainly seeing the benefits of her second season in our program,” he said.

MADISYN FREEMAN

An unsung hero at the Bay, Freeman has been in Glenelg’s best the past two matches doing an admirable job across half-back.

“Whilst her stats don’t show she’s at the top end like some other players, she’s probably been the best team player in terms of playing her role,” Fairall said.

WEST ADELAIDE

ZOE VENNING

A versatile midfielder, 18-year-old Venning has grown to become a key mover at West in the past four years and has continued to make an impact.

The 2021 joint club best and fairest winner amassed 22 touches in the Bloods’ opening round win over North, backing it up with another 20 in round two.

EMMA KILPATRICK

One of nine Bloods to have made their league debut this year, 15-year-old Kilpatrick has quickly made a strong impression at Richmond.

“She debuted in round two and has been outstanding,” Moody said.

“She’s taken her game to new levels and is going to be a long-term SANFLW player and I know she has aspirations to play AFLW.”

Kilpatrick gathered 17 touches and laid seven tackles in the round four defeat to Sturt.

KEELEY KUSTERMANN

Rising star Kustermann has made her name in defence but, partly due to West’s absences this season, she’s been thrown into the midfield and only enhanced her AFLW draft prospects.

“She’s trying to carry the workload at the moment and only being 17 years of age she’s doing a great job and playing inside the game,” Moody said.

“Last year she played mostly in difference but she’s gone into the middle and done well.

Kustermann has averaged 19.6 disposals per game – seventh most in the league.

MADISON RUSSELL

Handed the captaincy for the first time this season, Russell has regularly stood up in an often under-siege West defence.

The 20-year-old was a standout for her side in round two against the Eagles while also putting in solid performances the pas two matches facing South and Sturt.

BEATRICE DEVLYN

WA recruit Devlyn has been asked to play a few roles this year but has made a solid start at West Adelaide.

One of the former West Coast and Fremantle AFLW utility’s best performances came in round four when she was asked to step up into the ruck for the Bloods.

MADELYN ZACHER

Second-year defender Zacher have overcome the injury troubles which curtailed her 2021 season to become a key cog in the Bloods backline.

“Playing off a half-back flank she’s been outstanding for us and one of the shining lights,” Moody said.
