West Adelaide has survived a late and spritited fightback from North Adelaide to get its SANFLW season off to a winning start.
The Bloods led by 28 points heading into the final quarter at Richmond on Saturday before the Roosters charged back into the contest, kicking 3.5 and keeping the hosts scoreless in the fourth term.
But West just held on, recording a 6.4 (40) to 4.11 (35) victory over the wayward North.

SEASON PREVIEWS: SEE HOW EVERY SANFLW CLUB IS SHAPING UP
MATCH PREVIEW: ROOSTERS HIT BY OUTS
North Adelaide coach Krissie Steen is confident her side will get its SANFLW campaign off on the right foot, despite a string of players being forced into isolation on the eve of the season.
The Roosters are set for a tough test first up when they face defeated 2021 grand finalists West Adelaide at Richmond on Saturday.
The round one clash will be live streamed on advertiser.com.au from 12.45pm – The Advertiser’s first broadcast of the 2022 football season.
Steen, whose Roosters narrowly missed the finals last year, said up to 10 league players had already been forced out of the match due to Covid isolation.
But she believed those stepping up would be capable to help the side record a victory first up.
“We play to a system so any player can slot in and understand what we’re trying to do,” Steen said.
“As long as the girls play to our plan and we do that as well as we possibly can, I think we can come away with the win.”
All Roosters players and coaches will test prior to the game.
Should she herself have to miss the match, Steen was confident the wider North coaching team would handle anything thrown their way thanks to the amount of preparation put in since last season.
However, the Roosters should be boosted by some key inclusions with former Fremantle Docker Jade de Melo and Jess Edwards – who has returned from Carlton – in line to play Saturday.
For West Adelaide, the match represents an opportunity to begin its response to last season’s grand final defeat at the hands of Glenelg.
Bloods coach Mark Moody said the team was itching to go.
“To make the grand final was a huge achievement for the club,” Moody said.
“But we’re keen to get back and obviously go one step better.”
The Bloods have named seven debutants, including AFLW-experienced forward Beatrice Devlyn, Norwood recruit Jessica Macolino, ACT product Natasha McKay and rising talent Lucy Boyd.
West and North’s round one SANFLW match will be broadcast live here from 12.45pm on Saturday.
