A one-year hiatus will result in the standard of women’s footy at the SA Country Championships going up a notch, according to reigning MVP Tegan Nottle.

For just the third time, the girls will do battle alongside their male counterparts at the highly-anticipated event this Saturday and Sunday.

All 18 matches from the carnival will be live streamed exclusively by The Advertiser and Messenger.

The championships have been played since 1994, but 2018 was the first time women took to the field to represent their regional zones.

Last year’s carnival was cancelled amid the Covid pandemic.

Nottle, who will line up for Central after being named player of the championships last time out, said the standard of country players at the tournament would rise.

“Women’s footy is obviously getting more and more competitive as the years go on,” Nottle, 26, said.

“Especially considering a couple of years ago we were still playing with modified rules.

“Now we’re full oval, so I think it will definitely be a better, more competitive team game.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Nottle is a gun at local level for Gawler Central and was named as one of our 20 players to watch at the carnival.

The centre-half back has been in fine form for the Tigers already this season, featuring in the best players in six out of nine matches.

She will be key for Central as it looks to take it up to the other six regions, including hosts Southern Districts which won the 2019 championships.

Footy's return to the dusty ovals of the APY Lands

SANFL head of community football Lisa Faraci said the event had now become a highlight on the women’s football calendar in SA.

“It’s the showpiece for us in community football,” Faraci said.

“It does ultimately end up with players being picked up in SANFL and SANFLW and finding new careers in those areas.

“I think it’s a critical talent touchpoint for community footy – it’s one of those rare opportunities to bring everyone together.”

The carnival broadcast will get underway on advertiser.com.au at 9am on Saturday with matches from Victor Harbor and Encounter Bay ovals.

The event brings together SA’s 23 regional leagues, as more than 200 players represent six zones – Central, Eastern, Eyre Peninsula, Murray South East, Northern and Southern Districts.
