The state’s best primary school swimmers are ready to emulate the feats of Olympic Gold Medallist Kyle Chalmers this week.
And you can watch the stars of tomorrow battle it out with the The Advertiser and The Messenger’s exclusive live stream of the Sapsasa State Swimming Championships.
The two-day event, hosted by School Sport SA, will start on Thursday and Advertiser subscribers will be able to catch every race live (see schedule below) on advertiser.com.au from 9am.
Chalmers, who won gold in the 100m freestyle at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, was still the record holder in three Sapsasa events — the 13 year boys 50m freestyle (27.47 secs), open 100m freestyle (57.78 secs) and the 13 year boys 50m butterfly (29.01 secs).
Axel Tucker, will race in the 12 years boys 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke and the 50x4 freestyle relay for the South West metro district.
The Westminster School Year 7 student said it would be impressive if a swimmer could break Chalmers’ records this week.
“Kyle Chalmers is fast and it’d be a significant achievement for not just me, but anyone, to beat his records,” Axel said.
“I’m mostly looking forward to the breaststroke, it’s my favourite stroke and it’s really fun to swim.”
The State Sapsasa swimming Championships, which have been hosted since 1954, return in 2021 after the cancellation of last year’s titles because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year’s event will showcase talented girls and boys school swimmers in Years 4-7 selected in district representative teams.
There will be 18 metropolitan district teams and 22 from country areas.
Division one metro district teams will race during Thursday’s afternoon session and include East Adelaide, North Adelaide South West, Adelaide South East, Airport and Port.
Division two districts, including Adelaide North East, Salisbury East and Onkaparinga South, will race Thursday morning.
Fellow Westminster Year 7 student Poppy Doyle, will also represent the South West District is confident heading into her races.
“I’m excited,” Poppy said.
“I’ve been training hard and even though the championships were cancelled last year, I think it’s been good because it’s given me a chance to get even better.”
The country district teams will also be split into two divisions and are set to race across two sessions on Friday.
All races will be timed finals and there will also be five boys/girls combined multi-class events.
East Adelaide is the reigning metro champion, having claimed victory in 2019, while Lower Eyre Peninsula won the country district title.
The live streaming of the 2021 Sapsasa State Swimming Championships follows our broadcast of this year’s SA Country Swimming Championships and the 2020 SA Short Course Swimming Championships.
