Sturt made Glenelg pay for some inaccurate kicking to set up an intriguing rematch with North Adelaide in next weekend’s SANFLW decider.
Glenelg, last year’s premiers, kicked only 2.8 in the match and had to wait until the third quarter to kick their first goal.
Sturt kicked the only two goals of the first half to lead by nine points at the break and held on impressively when under pressure late on, eventually winning by 17 points.
They will now face North Adelaide, who beat them by 57 points in the semifinal the previous week, in the grand final
Preview: Tigers enjoying taking different finals route
Glenelg is embracing the cut-throat nature of this year’s finals campaign as it looks to keep the dream of back-to-back SANFLW flags alive.
And you can catch their latest finals adventure with The Advertiser’s live stream on Sunday afternoon from 1.10pm when they clash with Sturt in a preliminary final meeting. The winner will take on North Adelaide in the decider.
Tigers coach Jason Fairall said it was a different approach for his side this finals campaign, after it won directly through from the semi-final in 2021, had the bye and ultimately claimed the club’s first women’s title.
“When you’ve got up to three games and you’re in a situation where you have to win them all, it’s a similar feeling coming into each and having that continuity can be good,” Fairall said.
“The bye can throw up some challenges but now we’ve got no option, we just have to be battle ready.
“It’s cut-throat, if we lose we’re out.”
Glenelg overcame a strong challenge from South Adelaide in last week’s semi-final to claim a 16-point victory.
Fairall believed Sturt would pose another significant threat, with the two sides splitting the spoils in their minor round encounters.
“They embarrassed us a bit in round two, so that still lingers in the back of your mind, but we obviously did quite well in the round nine encounter,” he said.
“I think it should be an interesting battle.
“I’m not reading too much into the results from the weekend to be honest. We’re preparing for them to be at their best.”
Sturt’s SANFLW finals debut did not go to plan last week as it suffered a 57-point defeat at the hands of the Roosters, who progressed directly to the grand final.
Coach Michael O’Connor said the Double Blues had quickly moved on and remained confident they could bounce back.
“You don’t get to the stage of having the double chance by luck,” O’Connor said.
“(Last week) certainly wasn’t the result we were hoping for.
“But it doesn’t matter if you’ve lost by a point or 10 goals, we’ve earnt the right to play this week and go in confident in our game plan and that we can execute it against Glenelg.
“For us, it’s now a case of a bit of body maintenance and making sure we’re mentally refreshed.”
It will follow two other matches of live streamed SANFL action with Norwood facing Central District in a league clash on Friday night and West Adelaide taking on the Eagles in the under-18s on Saturday.
