South defender Joseph Haines collected a game-high 33 touches, including 31 kicks, while Josh Carmichael continued his strong form with a solid display for the losing Bloods.

Earlier, Norwood prevailed by 15 points over North Adelaide at Prospect Oval in a clash of under-18 talents.

The Redlegs led by seven points at the main break before five goals to one in the third term to set up the 10.7 (67) to 8.4 (52) victory.

Damon Pitt booted three majors for Norwood and Brandon Mu was influential with two goals to go with 23 touches.

James White (25 disposals) and Shaun Bennier (17 disposals, two goals) battled hard for the Rooster.

Glenelg and Central District then locked horns in the under-16 competition.

The Tigers came from three goals down at half-time to triumph over the wayward Dogs, 9.9 (63) to 6.13 (49) at Glenelg Oval.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

NORWOOD

Redlegs skipper Tyson Walls has made a huge impact for his side and has led from the front on a consistent basis this under-18 campaign.

The midfielder, who ranks sixth in the competition for disposals, has only seen his possession tally drop below 20 once this season and has racked up more than 30 on two occasions.

But Norwood under-18 coach Michael Knoll said it was not just Walls’ ability to find the footy which made him so effective for the Redlegs.

“Tyson’s certainly one of our most influential players in terms of his ability to win the footy and then use it to really set up our whole offence through the midfield,” Knoll said.

Walls was one of four Norwood players selected in the SA under-18 squad for the national championships next month alongside Phoenix Foster, Max Michalanney and Harvey Pedler.

RILEY VERRALL

Riley Verrall has caught the eye in 2022 as a talent at home in both the midfield and in a running half-back role.

The versatile Redleg, who was unlucky to miss the final cut for the state under-18 squad, is averaging 21 disposals and ranks fifth in the competition for rebound 50s in his second year at the level.

“His form has really built over the last couple of weeks and he’s competition really hard,” Knoll said.

“Riley’s getting better each week I think.”

LOGAN EVANS

Best on ground last round against Central District, bottom-ager Logan Evans is developing nicely into his first under-18 season.

The defender had a slow start to the year due to sickness in pre-season but collected 25 touches, eight rebound 50s and five marks in a stellar display against the Dogs – just his fourth match of the season.

“Logan’s really performing well in defence,” Knoll said.

“His ability to impact in the air and then work the ball out of our back half has been very impressive.”

BRAYDEN RACHWAL

Another Redleg who put together a standout display last week was Brayden Rachwal.

The key forward has given his side a genuine target in attack and his three goals and nine marks – four contested – against Central was his best return for the campaign.

The bottom-ager also booted two goals against West Adelaide earlier this season.

ALEX VAN WYK

Measuring in at 198cm and 105kg, Alex Van Wyk has proved to be a valuable asset in the ruck and up forward.

The big man ranks second in the under-18 competition for hit outs behind West Adelaide’s Harry Barnett, who will likely lead SA’s ruck division at the national championships.

Van Wyk, who has also kicked four goals in eight games, recorded an impressive 16 disposals, 33 hitouts and two majors against Glenelg in round four.

NORTH ADELAIDE

ISAAC KEELER

An exciting key forward/ruck who is rated by some as the most-talented player in SA’s draft crop this year, Isaac Keeler has drawn comparisons to St Kilda and former Port Adelaide big man Paddy Ryder.

The athletic 198cm prospect – part of the Adelaide Crows’ Next Generation Academy – appears to be coming into strong form after collecting 23 disposals last week and booting 4.2 in round seven.

“He hasn’t quite yet, but Isaac has that ability to take a game apart and he’s threatened to at times this year,” North Adelaide talent manager Neil Sanders said.

“He does some special things that other players can’t do.”

JAMES WHITE

North’s captain James White ranks fifth in the league for disposals this season and has been super consistent across the first eight rounds.

“He’s one to watch in the middle of the ground,” Sanders said.

“James is a strong bodied player, only mid-sized but can rack up the possessions.”

KELSEY RYPSTRA

Standing at 172cm, there isn’t a lot of Kelsey Rypstra.

But the small forward and midfielder with blistering speed hasn’t let it stop him making an impact this season.

“Kelsey has explosive pace, is good on the ground and above his head for his side,” Sanders said.

“He’s got a lot of good traits from an AFL perspective.”

Rypstra – one of eight Roosters in the state squad – racked up a game-high 39 disposals including 28 kicks against Glenelg earlier this month.

SHAUN BENNIER

A strong, tall defender with a good left boot, Shaun Bennier has impressed while coming through the grades at Prospect Oval.

“Shaun had an interrupted pre-season with some problems with his back but he’s just starting to hit his straps now,” Sanders said.

“He'll probably play a bit onball on the weekend as well.”

The 193cm key position player also showed his versatility going forward with four goals in round seven.

ANGUS TULLY

Angus Tully is a bottom-ager but has shown he is more than comfortable at under-18 standard in his second season at the level.

The ball magnet was runner-up in North’s under-16 best and fairest last season before progressing to play 11 matches at under-18 level later in 2021.

This season Tully has continued to make an impact for the Roosters, gathering more than 20 touches in three of his five games this campaign.
