Norwood has taken its SANFL season to a new level after claiming the big scalp of ladder leader North Adelaide on Saturday.

Both sides came into the clash full of confidence and could only be separated by a goal at the main break.

But Norwood – on the back of the likes of Jacob Kennerley, Jay Rantall, Nik Rokahr and Baynen Lowe – rose to the occasion in a nine-goal to four second half.

The 17.8 (110) to 11.8 (74) victory helps keep the Redlegs right in the mix for the double chance position.

North came in having lost just once in its past nine.

Veteran midfielder Andrew Moore’s four goals and collected 23 was a fighting performance for the losing side.

Before that, the live stream action kicked off with the Roosters and Redlegs doing battle in the under-16s with Norwood claiming a tight five-point victory.

A couple of goals separated the teams almost all day but the Redlegs were able to hold on for a 10.6 (66) to 9.7 (61) win.

Glenelg broke away from South Adelaide in the second half of their under-18 clash – the second live streamed match of the day – to triumph 15.7 (97) to 8.7 (55).

PREVIEW: EX-AFL REDLEG RUNNING HOT

Jay Rantall is just enjoying playing regular football again.

As much as he loved being in the AFL – and playing for Victorian giant Collingwood – the midfield endurance beast became frustrated with a lack of continuity.

In two years on the Magpies’ list, Rantall played only nine full AFL and VFL games because of the impact of Covid.

In his first year in 2020, the former junior basketball star was restricted to playing only AFL-sanctioned scratch matches after the VFL season was cancelled.

Last year, he played five AFL games - but two of them were as a medical substitute, including one unused – and six VFL matches.

“I played 9.5 games – if you want to count half the sub match – so not much at all over the two years, which was hard and frustrating,’’ the 21-year-old said.

“I’m not making excuses because I had my chances to play more at AFL level and I probably didn’t perform at the level I would have liked or expected from myself.

“But it’s been nice to get out there each week at Norwood and play consistent footy because that always helps with form, the ability to be able to just play each week.’’

Rantall makes no secret of his desire to earn another crack at the AFL.

And he is doing his chances no harm with a strong debut season in the SANFL, where he is averaging 24 disposals and six tackles for a Redlegs team that has overcome some tough early season losses to sit fourth after round 13.

Rantall saved his best performance for last week’s blockbuster against back-to-back premier Woodville-West Torrens.

Moving inside to the coalface in the absence of injured captain Matthew Nunn after spending most of his first 10 games playing on a wing or as a high half-forward, Rantall was best on ground.

He had 36 disposals, three goals, eight tackles and a whopping 189 Champion Data ranking points – 23 more than any other player in the competition - to lead Norwood to a stunning upset road win.

“I was probably lucky the ball bounced my way and I was able to get forward and kick a few goals,’’ he said modestly.

“Most importantly, it was a really good team effort and we played the way we want to play, priding ourselves on our pressure, tackling, winning the hard footy and a lot of loose ball gets.

“That’s the way I like to play my footy, so I’m blossoming with the way Norwood goes about things.’’

Selected at pick 40 at the 2019 national draft from the GWV Rebels, the 185cm Warrnambool product is renowned for his athletic prowess and running ability.

After representing Australia at the 2018 Under-17 World Basketball Championships before shifting his focus back to football, Rantall smashed the 2km time-trial record by 14 seconds at the AFL Draft Combine.

After a Covid-ravaged first year in the AFL, Rantall made his AFL debut in the 2021 Anzac Day blockbuster against Essendon at the MCG, describing the occasion as a “dream’’.

But he was used sparingly for the rest of the season before being delisted.

“Obviously it was disappointing to be cut but I learnt a lot from some of the stars at Collingwood and being able to compete with those guys gave me a lot of confidence,” Rantall said.

A distant relation to former South Melbourne, North Melbourne and Fitzroy star defender John Rantall, Jay said he still aspires to play AFL and that Norwood coach Jade Rawlings had helped him take his game to the next level.

“Twig (Rawlings) has been a great mentor for me and has really helped me harden my game, be a lot cleaner in the contest,’’ he said.

“Obviously I’d love to get back to the AFL but my main goal this year is to win a SANFL premiership.’’

Norwood can take a big step when it hosts top-of-the-table North Adelaide on Saturday.

The match will be live streamed here by KommunityTV from 2.10pm.

“They are a great side and it will be a good challenge but we think we are up to it,’’

Rantall said.

Two other SANFL clashes – North v Norwood in the under-16s at 11am and Glenelg v South in the under-18s at 1.15pm – will also be broadcast live on advertiser.com.au on Saturday.
