SANFL Round 13: Roosters’ record romp, team of week, winners, losers

Who’s hot, who's not, team of the week and all you need to know from Round 13. The Advertiser takes you behind the scenes of Australia’s best state league competition.

Replay: SANFL: Central District v South Adelaide (League)

A record win for ladder leader North Adelaide against one-goal Port Adelaide and the Crows send an ominous warning to their SANFL rivals that they are a genuine flag contender.

In a round where Norwood also made a finals statement, South Adelaide appears to have dropped out of the finals race by losing a late lead to Central District, while Adelaide ball magnet Matt Crouch made a personal statement to the Crows’ selectors.

Here’s all you need to know about an action-packed round 13.

POWER RANKINGS

1. North Adelaide

(10-2: Moved a win plus percentage clear at the top of the table with a record demolition of Port, remarkably restricting the Magpies to only one goal in some small payback for the 1989 grand final disaster. The 126-point victory was a record for North against Port, surpassing its previous biggest winning margin of 83 points in 1971).

2. Adelaide

(9-3: Proved it is a genuine flag threat by thrashing previously second-placed Glenelg at the Bay by 74 points. The two premiership points were handy and so was the healthy percentage. Matt Crouch starred with 41 disposals, 11 clearances and two goals to send a strong message to the Crows’ AFL selectors).

3. Glenelg

(9-3: Crashed to its heaviest defeat in the Brett Hand coaching era. The Tigers, disappointingly, didn’t really give a yelp, falling 62 points behind at half-time, and need to hit back hard against South on Saturday).

4. Norwood

(7-5: Has overcome some tough, early season losses to move into fourth following an outstanding road win against back-to-back premier Woodville-West Torrens on Sunday. Has now won three consecutive games ahead of a home blockbuster against North on Saturday).

5. Woodville-West Torrens

(7-5: The Eagles are in some trouble after being brushed aside by the Redlegs at home, prompting dual premiership coach Jade Sheedy to admit his side is “lacking a bit of our DNA at the moment’’).

6. Sturt

(7-5: After losing four of its previous five games, the Double Blues needed to beat hapless West at home and it won convincingly, keeping the Bloods goalless in the first half).

7. South Adelaide

(5-7: Has fallen two wins outside the top five after coughing up a 20-point lead in the final quarter to lose to Central by one-point at Elizabeth. Has had a horror injury run this season and it continued on the weekend, with both Oliver Davis and Mitch O’Neill hurt against the Dogs).

8. Central District

(3-9: The Bulldogs are barking again after winning two of their past three games, with the nice scalps of the Eagles and Panthers. “It's probably a culmination of the hard work we have done going back to the summer,’’ coach Paul Thomas said.

9. Port Adelaide

(3-9: A series of injuries at AFL level has ripped the heart out of Port’s SANFL team but coach Matthew Lokan rightly labelled the one-goal effort against North as “embarrassing’’. The Pies’ 1.4 was their lowest score since 1900).

10. West Adelaide

(0-12: The struggling Bloods took a step back against Sturt on Saturday, failing to kick a goal in the first half. Their horror losing streak has now stretched to 25 games over the past two seasons).

SAY WHAT

(Quotes of the week)

“We’re playing teams that are more desperate than us - that’s as simple as it is. The contested stuff has been our one-wood the past two years and we’re lacking a bit of our DNA at the moment. We got beaten badly in that part of the game. When they (Norwood) are winning and they out-tackle and out-hunt you, it’s a massive concern. Every time a team plays the Eagles, they want to beat us because of what we’ve achieved.”

Eagles coach Jade Sheedy.

“We lost our captain, our coach, one of our best players in (Matthew) Panos and also (Mitch) Cotter from last week and (Xavier) Tranfa to a personal engagement. We had quite a lot of changes and the players who came in performed really well. Our ability to outnumber them on loose balls around the ground allowed us to handball, run and create dangerous forward entries and our ability to keep the ball in our forward half for long periods was important. We thought if we matched them at the contest and defended their back half to front half transition, we’d be in with a shot.”

Norwood assistant coach James Saywell.

“For my time as a player and a coach at this club, we have been synonymous for not throwing the towel in. We hang in there, that’s us, that’s who we are and we got the result.”

Central coach Paul Thomas.

“I was proud of the whole team, they played so well and started with a strong defensive effort. We knew Port had players out and when you don’t know exactly who they have in we just wanted to control what we could control. Everyone played their roles and we played with great skill, we had plenty of good players.’’

North coach Jacob Surjan.

“This is not the Port way and we know that. We’re not going to make excuses, that was embarrassing. Our ability to be able to execute under any pressure was really poor and we didn’t defend. It was like a training drill for North. They dominated possession.’’

Port coach Matthew Lokan.
