PREVIEW: Central dynamo admits ‘I owe Kozzie a lot’

Isaiah Dudley has revealed Melbourne premiership player Kysaiah Pickett helped save him from the football scrap heap.

Conceding he got ahead of himself in his draft year and that being shockingly spurned by AFL clubs at the end of last season was a “big wake-up call’’, the dynamic Central District small forward said he might have drifted out of the game as an unfulfilled talent if not for his cousin Pickett shaking him into action.

After playing a key role in the Demons snapping a 57-year premiership drought last season, Kysaiah Pickett returned to Adelaide – he was drafted from SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens – and insisted Isaiah Dudley went to work.

Knowing the once highly-touted Crows NGA prospect, who is a nephew of former AFL superstars Shaun Burgoyne and Eddie Betts, had fallen off the radar of AFL clubs because of a questionable attitude and work ethic, Pickett, who has become one of the national competition’s most explosive small forwards, took Dudley under his wing.

For two months he dragged him out of bed at 6.30am, making him his training partner at Peak Fitness Gym at Port Adelaide.

It was too late for Dudley to convince AFL recruiters that he was worth taking a punt on at last year’s drafts but it’s paid dividends this year.

After strong form in the Bulldogs’ reserves, the 19-year-old made his SANFL league debut against Port Adelaide in round 10 and has held his spot since.

Suddenly, AFL clubs are taking notice again.

“I owe Kozzie (Pickett) a lot,’’ said 168cm pocket rocket Dudley.

“It was really tough not getting drafted and clubs told me that they had concerns over my workrate on the field and my commitment off it, all that kind of stuff.

“It was tough to hear but I took the feedback on board because it was right and my teammates told me the same thing.

“I reckon I got ahead of myself, got caught up in things, just thinking everything was going to happen for me - some people around me thought the same - and that I was going to get drafted without doing the work I needed to do.’’

Enter Pickett.

“He came back to Adelaide in his off-season and got to work with me,’’ said Dudley, who Central and Hawthorn great John Platten described as a “football wizard’’.

“Kozzie (Pickett) said he’d help me have a big year and to follow his guidance.

“He took me with him to the Peak gym for two months. I’d get up at 6.30am for a 6.50am gym start and we’d go until about 9am, combining weights with running and some other power stuff. We also worked on my skills.

“It was a complete change of routine and diet and it’s made a big difference.

“I’ve lost a couple of kilos, improved my skinfolds, put on some strength and am running much better times, so hopefully I’m heading in the right direction.

“AFL’s been my dream since I was a little kid and I think I’m finally putting my best foot forward to give myself a chance to make it.’’

An All-Australian at under-16 level, the Port Lincoln-born Dudley also paid tribute to the support he’s had at Central, particularly from key forward Aiden Grace, who he said had “been a big influence on me’’.

Magarey and Brownlow Medallist Platten, who is on the Bulldogs’ coaching staff, said Dudley had talent to burn, possessing similar skills to former Carlton and Crows star Betts.

“He has unbelievable skills, kicks some wonderful goals, turns blokes inside out, makes miracle plays, shows the candy, tackles hard,’’ Platten said, adding he could be a “superstar” if he continued to work hard.

Dudley, who has averaged nine disposals, four tackles and kicked a goal in his three league games, wants to make a bigger statement in Saturday’s home clash against South Adelaide in SANFL Indigenous Round, saying, “I want to bring some excitement to the game’’.

The Dogs’ match against the Panthers at 2.10pm will be one of three SANFL games live streamed here by KommunityTV on Saturday.

Norwood and the Eagles will kick things off in the under-18s at 10.30am, followed by the under-16 contest between West Adelaide and Sturt at 11.30am.
