Jye Menzie wants to become the “complete package’’.
The electrifying small forward, who has taken the SANFL by storm in his first two games with South Adelaide, has an undeniable bag of tricks but believes he has been overlooked by AFL clubs at two drafts because of his inconsistency.
He is determined to change that.
“That’s the main thing I’m trying to work on,’’ said the 19-year-old Tasmanian, who leads the SANFL goalkicking with 10 after booting four on debut against Central District and a matchwinning six against Port Adelaide last week.
“I need to string four good quarters together more regularly, become the complete package, instead of just having these little glimpses here and there.
“I definitely think I’ve got it in me to play AFL, which has been my dream since I was a little kid, but consistency has been an issue.
“I want to fix that, earn the trust of AFL clubs and get them to pick me.’’
The mercurial Menzie, 180cm, is making his point.
He has hit the ground running in the SANFL – a competition he joined to push his AFL claims – with two eye-catching displays.
And the exciting recruit will look to help the Panthers to a 3-0 start when they host Sturt in an intriguing Good Friday clash – live streamed here by The Advertiser from 1.10pm.
It is one of three back-to-back matches which will be broadcast on advertiser.com.au on Friday.
“It’s the best league outside of the AFL, so I wanted to test myself against the quality players that are here and if I can perform consistently well then it can only help my draft cause,’’ Menzie said after starring in consecutive come-from-behind wins against the ‘Dogs and ‘Pies which earned him The Advertiser SANFL Team of the Week selection.
In an era where damaging small forwards are worth their weight in gold, Menzie is a human highlight reel with top-level traits.
Modelling his game on a combination of Sydney’s Isaac Heeney, Brisbane’s Charlie Cameron and Port’s Connor Rozee, he is quick, elusive, has great goal sense, X-factor and good footy IQ.
After deciding to try his luck in the SANFL, the Hobart-born Menzie, a carpenter who loves surfing in his spare time, chose the Panthers because of the club’s “Tassie crew’’.
“Mitch O’Neill and Fraser Turner were already there, Ollie Davis, who is a good mate of mine and my new housemate, made the move from the Crows and Harrison Gunther was also joining South from Tassie, so we were all keen to play together,’’ he said.
South signed some big-name recruits from the AFL in the off-season, headlined by ruckman Keegan Brooksby, who returned to Pantherland, Ryan Garthwaite, Oscar Brownless and Oscar Claravino, meaning Menzie flew under the radar.
While it is only early days, he has made the biggest impact.
“I was happy that no-one knew who I was and that I could just go about my business with no outside noise,’’ Menzie said.
His standout performances means that is about to change, with defenders now putting a target on his back.
“I’m up for the challenge and will just continue to try to do what my coaches ask of me,’’ he said as South prepared for the Good Friday blockbuster against Sturt at Noarlunga.
The Advertiser’s Good Friday live stream coverage will begin with the Panthers and Double Blues going head-to-head in the under-16s from 11.00am, followed by the league clash at 1.10pm.
Norwood and Glenelg will then lock horns in the under-18s at 4.45pm.
The matches are part of The Advertiser’s season-long live stream deal to bring readers the best of the league every weekend.
