When Tayla Philis and Harrison Hunt take to Glenelg Oval for the Bay Sheffield they will have more on their minds than their own races.
The sprinting pair, who are partners off the track, will be among the key chances for the showcase 120m women’s and men’s events at South Australia’s richest foot race on December 28.
For the second year running, every race on both days of the South Australian Athletic League’s Bay Sheffield will be live streamed by The Advertiser.
Philis was hopeful of making her first 120m final at the carnival and potentially match the feats of partner Hunt, who came from the backmark to triumph in the men’s Gift in 2018.
“He’s made me a better athlete for sure, we bounce off each other and it’s really good to have each other’s support out there all the time,” Philis, 24, said.
“To both reach the final would be really cool.
“I haven’t made a final yet so that’s the main goal and anything else this year would just be a bonus.
“I’ve made a few semis and came third and fourth in those but never squeezed into a final.
“I’m in a good position this year so hopefully I can give it a really good crack.”
Both Philis and Hunt – coached by Dylan Hicks and Philis’ father Gaby Philis – come into the Bay Sheffield on solid form alongside fellow strong chances Jesse Cordoma and Olivia Hastings.
Hunt, 22, expected the competition to be tough but hoped he would be in the mix and receive a more favourable mark after running off scratch the past two carnival’s following his 2018 victory.
“The competition’s looking pretty tough as usual,” Hunt said.
“I’m feeling pretty confident … I’ve had a few ups and downs this season with hamstring problems but I’m all on top of that now and I just need to get in three good runs.”
The Bay Sheffield – live streamed right here on advertiser.com.au – will begin at 10.45am on Monday, December 27 with coverage of every race to resume again on December 28.
It includes the culmination of the carnival with the 120m women’s and men’s events.
