REPLAY: Bay Sheffield Women's 120m Final

Five months ago Izzi Batt-Doyle and Matt Clarke were on the world stage at their first Olympics, now the SA pair will look to cap off a huge 2021 with their debuts at the state’s most iconic foot race carnival.

The Tokyo Olympians will line up in the 3200m on the first day of this year’s Bay Sheffield when the 135-year-old carnival returns to Glenelg Oval on December 27 and 28.

Regular runners will get the chance to pit their talent against the elite athletes in the handicapped event.

For the second year running, every race on both days of the Bay Sheffield will be live streamed by The Advertiser.

Batt-Doyle – who ran a 15min 21sec in the 5000m in Tokyo – said she was excited to compete at the Bay Sheffield for the first time after many years spent as a spectator.

“It’s great to see Olympians running at the Bay Sheff and I love the fact with the 3200m being on it brings distance running on show at this premiere event,” said Batt-Doyle, fresh off a win in her debut half-marathon at the Melbourne Marathon Festival on Sunday.

“Having always done traditional running, starting on the line and the fastest person wins – that’s the style of running I like the most – but it’s interesting to mix it up.

“Handicap running brings to the table that different type of atmosphere and excitement.

“It’s anyone’s day and anyone can win.”

After fulfilling a lifelong goal of making the Olympics, Batt-Doyle said the support she had received from the SA running community was incredible.

“The Bay Sheffield will be the last event on my calendar for 2021 and will hopefully cap off what’s been a fantastic year for me,” the 26-year-old said.

“I’m really looking forward to finishing it off here in Adelaide at such a prestigious event.”

For Clarke, who qualified for the 3000m steeplechase and ran 14th in his heat at Tokyo, competing at SA’s iconic foot race carnival marks another step in his growing attachment to the state.

The Victorian-born 26-year-old took the plunge and moved to Adelaide in 2019 for running, which paid off with a late call-up to the Olympics.

“To get named in the team felt pretty special after taking the risk, moving my whole life over here and devoting myself to it,” Clarke said.

“I think I’ll probably stay here for good now to be honest. It’s my first time ever doing a handicapped pro race … I’m really looking forward to doing it at the Bay Sheffield.”

The Bay Sheffield will return to Glenelg Oval for the second straight year across two days, culminating with the 120m men’s and women’s race on December 28.

All the action will be broadcast live on advertiser.com.au.
