Hayley Orman calls December 28 her Christmas Day.
While the focal point of the festive season comes three days earlier for most, the Stawell Gift champion says the Bay Sheffield is what she looks forward to most.
The 27-year-old sprinter is hellbent on adding an elusive Bay Sheffield crown to her terrific 2021 which included taking out Australia’s richest female footrace in April.
This Saturday marks 100 days until the iconic SA event, which will be live streamed by The Advertiser from Glenelg Oval for the second year running.
“I always call it my Christmas Day,” Orman, of Flagstaff Hill, said.
“On actual Christmas Day I’m more focused on the 28th than I am the 25th.
“It’s just the atmosphere, the build up and it’s just such a special race.
“It’s a very special event to run at and something I’ve always loved.”
The Bay Sheffield will return to Glenelg Oval for the second straight year across two days, culminating with the 120m men’s and women’s race on December 28.
All the action will be broadcast live on advertiser.com.au.
While aware she will be a backmarker at the December event, where her best finish was third place in 2019, Orman said it’s been something she’s been comfortable with throughout her career.
But in April, she came off 9.75m and won in 13.88s to claim the $40,000 cheque at Stawell.
It was a victory Orman, who combines her sprint training with work as an affineur ageing cheese, described as “a dream come true”.
“Leading up to Stawell I was struggling with quite a few injuries which made the win ever more sweet,” she said.
“To be able to execute what I did on the day but also to be bale to handle that intense, high-pressure situation is something that’s still sinking in even now.
“There were a lot of people questioning whether I was done after that – apparently 27 is old now – but I’m definitely not done and definitely more inspired to keep pushing myself.
“I’m a very driven young woman … I don’t tend to do anything half-arsed.”
The 135th running of the Bay Sheffield will take place on from December 27-28.
