Cruz Evans saw off a hot field to take the open bowl title at the Western Rumble at Mandurah Skatepark in Perth on Sunday.

The young gun proved too strong for veteran RJ Barbaro and Zen Evans in a high-class competition.

Earlier, Josh Birtwistle produced some quality rides when he needed them most to take the men’s street skate title at Port Kennedy in style on Saturday.

The local star, who finished second last year, found himself behind after the first ride but got stronger as the competition progressed and beat Connor Atkinson and Taj Branch to the title.

PREVIEW

It’s the sport that started in empty pools across a drought-stricken California, but has now taken up residency on world sport’s biggest stage.

For the first time, bowl skateboarding will take over the screens of KommunityTV as our cameras head to the wild west to capture all the high-octane action of the BMD Western Rumble.

It is the second-straight year KommunityTV has partnered with The Rumble organisers to bring the best of the Western Rumble to life on the small screen, with the coverage expanding across two days this year.

THE STRANGE TECHNIQUE THAT HAS YOUNG GUN EYEING GLORY

The exclusive live stream coverage of the second stop on The Rumble tour will include all of the senior action from the street event at Port Kennedy Skate Park on Saturday before the bowl event takes over the Mandurah Skate Park on Sunday.

Pacific Action Sports’ Donny Fraser said the bowl event would provide a completely different competitive environment, one that would take no prisoners.

“It is really fast-paced, it is back-to-back runs, it is all the big air sort of stuff you see at the X-Games coupled with the technical flowing bowl course,” he said.

“It is very much entertainment focused.

“It is totally different to street. It is very-much like surfing. In the bowl, the runs are like carving a surfboard across the face of a wave. It is based on style and flow, not just how many tricks you can fit in.”

With the Paris Olympics just around the corner, and Australia’s best young skateboarders putting in their final touches across the globe, the event has provided an opportunity for the next generation to make their mark on the concrete.

While some of Australia’s top competitors will be in Dubai at the Olympic qualifiers, Fraser said it only opened the door to a host of exciting young talent from the west coast.

“The WA talent pool is one of the deepest in the country and we are keen to get them competing,” he said.

“The Western Rumble was the first stop we added to the Rumble tour after we left Queensland for the first time because it was a priority for us to service the whole country.

“I don’t feel like it is a national series unless you have an event in WA, which is why we are proud to come back every year.”

KommunityTV’s exclusive coverage of the Western Rumble is the second stop on The Rumble tour, which started with the Southern Rumble in Adelaide earlier this year.
