Striving for athletics stardom in the regions isn’t easy.

Just ask a weary Toby Rule. The year 11 student can barely keep his eyes open when he rocks up for an afternoon interview at his local athletics track.

You can’t blame the kid though.

His day begins with an early morning flight from Brisbane back home to Mackay, having knocked off two PB’s over the weekend at the Queensland Athletics State Championships, then it’s straight to school.

By Friday, he’ll be back in Brisbane, this time competing at the Little Athletics Queensland State Championships.

You can catch the final two days of the three-day event LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV from 8am (AEST) on Saturday morning.

How does a young teen approach such a hectic schedule?

For Rule, simplicity is key.

“I just pack my bags when mum says,” he said with a wry smile.

Rule described last weekend’s work in Brisbane as a ‘good meet’.

He shattered his PB by 11 seconds in the 1500m steeplechase, and also set a two-second PB in the 1500m. Good meet, alright.

The best part? He’s only tapering in his training, as he hopes to peak for nationals later in the year.

Regardless, Rule has his eyes firmly fixed on a pair of state records in the under-17 800m and 1500m events at the LAQ State Championships.

“I’ll try and get a new PB and hopefully a state record (in both),” said Rule.

He’ll have to top times of 1:59.66 and 4:09.49 respectively. Both were set by Arana’s Hamish Granger in 2015.

And in case you needed any indication as to how hard Rule works, remember how he flew home from Brisbane and then spent a full day at school before this interview?

Well, now he’s heading off to go on an hour-long run. He typically ticks over between 80 and 90km a week.
