PREVIEW
The Queensland Little Athletics State Championships has been a rite of passage for many young athletes over the years.
And this year holds special significance.
With the 2032 Brisbane Olympics closing fast, these championships could be the first step, leap or vault for our young athletes on their journey to the top of the sport.
For the first time, KommunityTV will capture every event on the track as well as select field events across two dedicated live streams during the last two days of the championships from the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre in Nathan on Saturday and Sunday.
The exclusive live stream coverage of the Queensland Little Athletics State Championships on Saturday and Sunday will include the best action from the track and field events. It will be broadcast across the Courier Mail and all of News Corp Australia’s regional Queensland mastheads.
More than 2000 young athletes will compete during the Little Athletics championships as they aim to emulate their heroes on the big stage.
National icon Sally Pearson OAM, and decathletes Ashley Moloney and Cedric Dubler are among the star Olympians to have shone in the Queensland Little Athletics State Championships in their formative years.

Other notable Olympians to have previously competed include Riley Day, Dane Bird-Smith, Alana Quade (formerly Alana Boyd), Rheed McCracken, and Samantha Schmidt.
“It’s the pinnacle event of our season,” Little Athletics Queensland chief executive officer Christopher Davis said.
He lauded the range of athletes that will be on display at the championships.
“We’ve got current state record holders, (right through to) under-9 athletes competing for the first time, and plenty of athletes who are qualifying for the first time which is always fantastic to see,” Davis said.
“It’s a great experience for athletes whether they’re happy to have just qualified or looking to contend for medals and the state title.”
Athletes representing 80 different Little Athletics centres across the state will compete across more than 350 individual events across the three days.
Centres from Tweed all the way up to the Douglas Shire, and as far inland as Goondiwindi will be represented, with athletes as young as Under-9s through to Under-17s competing.
The state championships take on even more significance this year as Little Athletics Queensland celebrates half a century in operation.
The championships will also carry extra importance for athletes between the ages of 13-15, who will contest for selection on the Queensland team to travel to Adelaide in April to feature in the Australian Little Athletics Championships.
Arana under-17 walking talent Bailey Housden will be one athlete to keep an eye on across the weekend. He holds an Australian record, and is ranked number two in the world for under-18s in the 10,000m walk.
There must be something in the water at Arana, because the centre’s under-16 talent Amaya Mearns also holds Australian records at both 100m and 200m.
Other athletes set to take centre stage include West Bundaberg’s Jonty Murdoch (under-17, shot put and javelin), Maroochydore’s Liam O’Neill (under-16, 800m), and Mackay’s Toby Rule (under-17, 800m).
