Henley High School lived up to its favouritism, producing a powerhouse display in Thursday’s School Sport SA open basketball finals at the Lights Community and Sports Centre.
Taking the final was no easy matter, however, as Henley weathered a strong third-quarter charge from Prince Alfred College.
Henley edged to a 17-12 lead at the first break before stretching that to 33-23 at the long break.
But PAC was far from done and produced its best basketball in the third term, holding Henley to six points and closing to 39-37.
Henley rediscovered its offensive groove in the final term to take the title 52-44.
Earlier, Trinity went into Thursday’s School Sport SA open basketball finals at the Lights Community and Sports Centre hunting an upset, but had to settle for late heroics and third place.
The college’s Open Boys side took on competition favourite Henley on Court 1 in the first of two semi-finals.
Having just lost to Price Alfred College’s team, which clashed with Modbury in the other semi, Trinity’s team was ready to bounce back.
“We’re in it to win. When you get this close to a state title, it’s all about winning – we won’t settle for anything less,” said sport co-ordinator and former Adelaide 36er Rupert Sapwell.
“Henley has a lot of talent, shooters everywhere, ball handlers everywhere … our defence will have to be on high alert.
“We’re bigger, so if we can control the rebounds, we’ll control the game.”
Sadly for Trinity, Henley lived up to its reputation, winning 64-51 in the semi.
Meanwhile, on Court 2, Modbury went head-to-head with PAC.
Prince Alfred showed was far stronger in a clash of two sides boasting strong offensive and defensive talent, cruising to a 60-43 win
Trinity turned in a powerhouse performance in the match for third place, crushing Modbury 79-51.
