Due to a production error beyond our control, there was no vision from the opening quarter of Wednesday night’s Tango v Metro Jets reserves game. We apologise for the inconvenience and will have a full replay of the match available early on Thursday morning. The replay of the last three quarters is below.
Tango turned in a powerhouse final quarter performance to topple Metro Jets and break their Netball SA Premier League duck at the third time of asking.
Down 36-33 at three-quarter time after a 13-9 run put the Metro Jets in charge, Tango regathered their composure to not just reel in their rivals, but confidently hold off any late ideas of a comeback once they hit the lead for a 50-47 victory.
After heavy defeats to Oakdale and Contax in their opening two games, the win will surely be a relief for Tango, who will look to make it two in a row next week against bottom side Newton Jaguars.
Jacoba Clough and Tenille Gray were impressive as an attacking unit throughout the match, but really came alive in the final quarter as they nailed their shots and took advantage of a tiring defence.
Clough ended up with 32 goals, while Gray contributed 18.
After finally getting to the lead for the first time with six minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Jets couldn’t sustain their run and they now drop to one win and two losses from their three games. Rebecca Taheny scored 32 goals while Mackenzie Rathjen grabbed 15.
Tango got the jump early in the first quarter but some uncharacteristic misses late on from Clough gave Jets possession and they drew level 13-13 at the opening break.
Tango again snuck ahead in the second quarter only for the Jets to level it at 22-22.
The Clough-Gray double act then gave a glimpse of what damage they could cause with the last two goals of the quarter to give Tango a 24-22 lead.
Metro Jets v Tango (Reserves) - Netball SA Premier League Round 3
Meanwhile, the big night continued for Tango with a surprise victory over Metro Jets in the reserves encounter.
The Jets were unbeaten after the first two rounds while Tango had struggled in big losses to Oakdale and Contax.
Yet Tango jumped out to an early lead and were never headed, extending their advantage at every break to eventually win 48-34.
PREVIEW
Tango is eyeing its first win this Netball SA Premier League season when it clashes with Metro Jets on Wednesday night as coach Andrew Plenty urges his team to “get back to basics”.
His side sits bottom of the ladder at 0-2 so far this year but Plenty said they had learned a lot after clashes with Oakdale and Contax – two of the competition’s strong sides.
You can watch all the action from the Premier League and Reserves double header LIVE and EXCLUSIVE right here on the Advertiser website and KommunityTV from 7pm.
“Oakdale was strong at the ball and dictated the game. We learned a lot from that clash,” Plenty said.
“Contax, well they are still the benchmark of the competition. They’re a very good team, well-coached and disciplined in their structures and the way they want to play.
“I believe we have to go back to basics this week, get our transitions correct, don’t hang on to the ball, communicate on court and trust each other.”
Tango has seen a number of squad changes for the 2024 season, bringing in new goal shooter Jacoba Clough from Garville to pair with Tenille Gray and also rotating a number of new players through the defensive circle.
Plenty said it would take time for the team to gel.
“There are some structures which are still a work in progress,” he said.
“We have a new shooter and are still finetuning connections and all three of our circle defenders are either new to the Premier League or played for another club last season so they need time to adjust.
“We have seen glimpses of what the team can do at training but it’s about trying to play four full quarters at the moment.
“A win on Wednesday would bring back some much-needed confidence and will also show the things we have been working on can have us heading in the right direction.”
Metro Jets have a 1-1 record after the first two rounds of 2024 with a dramatic one-goal win over Newton Jaguars and a loss to Garville.
Coach Trudy Barker said a win on Wednesday would go a long way towards finding the consistency needed for the rest of the season.
“The last couple seasons we had some tough runs early so it has been good to get a solid early win this year and have a positive start to the season,” Barker said.
“We’ve got a lot of new players in again this year and are developing the younger girls in the Reserves who are now 2-0 so the signs have been good.
“We’ve got a bit of gelling to do but when we do gel we’ve been really good to watch and I think once we become a bit more consistent and more confident we’ll be playing really well each week.
“A win on Wednesday would be very important for our own development and our confidence moving deeper into the season.”
