Oakdale Netball Club coach Vanessa Dempsey hopes more Indigenous representation at the state and national level will help inspire the next generation.

Netball SA’s eight Premier League clubs will unite for the annual First Nations Round on Friday night, with Oakdale’s clashes with South Adelaide to be live streamed by The Advertiser.

Teams will take to the court in specially designed dresses for the round, which coincides with National Reconciliation week.

Dempsey, who in 2018 became the first Aboriginal to coach an Netball SA Premier League side, said First Nations Round was important to make sure aspiring netballers remained engaged in the sport beyond the local level.

“Especially in this mainstream space, we do have a lot of young Aboriginal women and now even young men that love netball,” Dempsey said.

“We definitely play it out in our local communities and associations, but there’s just a bit of a gap transitioning into the mainstream or pre-elite level.

“We’ve got three Indigenous girls in our squad of 30 and then me as the head coach.

“There’s that saying of ‘you can’t be what you can’t see’, so it’s really important for myself and those three girls to keep being roles models and show that it’s possible.”

Both matches will be broadcast live by The Advertiser at 7pm and 8.30pm.

Oakdale’s First Nations Round dress was designed by current inter player Kylah Adams and tells the story of her journey, the game of netball and community.

The South Adelaide – formerly Woods Panthers – dress is a nod to its inaugural season under its new banner in partnership with the South Adelaide Football Club

It focuses on the idea of coming together to create a new family and community in the club – values that are central to Indigenous ways of knowing and being.

Dempsey praised Oakdale for its support and work in driving cultural change.

“Being a part of a club like Oakdale, we have another good cohort of Aboriginal families, the club’s very inclusive and really works hard at being culturally responsive,” she said.

“They’re really leading by example.

“It has to be about everyone standing up and showing up, being brave and making that change.”

Oakdale and South Adelaide – two of five clubs tied on top of the Premier League ladder with 3-1 win-loss records – will both hope to continue their strong starts to the season on Friday night.

The live stream here on advertiser.com.au will begin with the reserves clash at 7pm.
