Blistering pace through the midfield and slick transitions out of their defensive 50 has helped Woodville-West Torrens snuff out a willing fightback from the Bulldogs to notch a SANFL Development League double.

The Eagles literally flew through the middle of Wodville Oval as they outscored the Bulldogs 5.7 (37) to 4.5(27) win in a thrilling under-14s clash.

It capped off a memorable night on home soil for the green and yellow brigade, who had earlier stormed home to a 65-19 win in the under-13s.

While the Eagles enjoyed a fast start in the under-14s clash, a willing Central Districts side refused to give up hope in the second half.

A booming 50m goal after halftime appeared to spark the visitors as they fought back with a 13-1 third quarter.

But it was the pace of the Eagles ball movement that proved hard to contain in a scrappy final term, as they held on with a late goal.

The Eagles most certainly soared in the younger age group, blasting the Bulldogs off the park in a 46-point victory.

The Eagles were on fire from the outset, booting home eight unanswered goals in the first half as they passed a half-century by the main break.

The Bulldogs found their bite in the second half and mounted a small fight back with two maximums, but it was never enough to upset the high-flying Eagles.

PREVIEW: Dogs relish giving young brigade a taste of the top flight

Giving young talent a taste of life at an SANFL club on and off the field is key to bringing through Central District’s next wave of players, according to development manager Scott Stevens.

The Dogs’ under-13 and under-14 boys sides will be in action – live streamed exclusively by KommunityTV – when they go to Woodville Oval to take on the Eagles on Thursday night.

Both SANFL Development Leagues matches will be broadcast here beginning at 5.30pm.

Stevens said it was important to provide the emerging talent an insight into the system of a state league club, while not placing too much pressure on the youngsters.

“There’s such a wide range of players that come through in different stages of development and they all grow at different rates,” Stevens said.

“They play forward, midfield and defence when they get their opportunity … then when they move up into the under-15s it’s about settling them down and trying to find the best positions for those kids.”

Central’s under-13s are coached by league footballer Billy Iles, while the under-14s are led by experienced junior coach Gary Howden.

“We try to get a senior player or two involved at this level and he (Iles) put his hand up last year when he came to the club, which is really good,” Stevens said.

Central’s opponent on Thursday night – Woodville-West Torrens – has already featured in KommunityTV’s live streamed games in May.

The SANFL Development Leagues, which feature under-13, 14 and 15 boys as well as under-14 and 16 girls competitions, are the first stepping stones in the pathway to senior state league football.

In 2022, The Advertiser will stream weekly matches from the competition for the first time.

The under-13 game will get underway from 5.30pm at Woodville, followed by the under-14 clash at 6.50pm.
