PREVIEW: INTERSTATE CLUBS STORM INTO SA
A horde of interstate basketballers are set to make a traditional trip across the border as they descend on Adelaide for the annual Easter Classic this weekend.
More than 2300 players and 285 teams will compete at the tournament with clubs from Victoria and NSW sending strong contingents to take on SA’s best.
The Advertiser will exclusively live stream 15 grand finals from the Classic, beginning from 8am on Easter Monday.
Following from our coverage of last year’s tournament, the broadcast will feature live streamed title deciders from three courts simultaneously – two at St Clair and one at The ARC Campbelltown.
Victorian club Camberwell Dragons – from Melbourne’s inner-east – will send what president Matt Bubb described as a “small army” of 43 teams to the Easter Classic.
He said the tournament’s atmosphere around Adelaide and the opportunity for club and team bonding made it a special event.
“Last year we had 26 or 27 teams so to bring across 43 is great … we’ve made a fair dent in the accommodation in Glenelg each year,” Bubb said.
“It’s a voluntary tournament, not a compulsory one, and I think it’s just been a product of over the years the numbers have steadily increased.
“Particularly last year, those who went last year had a terrific experience and word of mouth spread and the numbers took off.
“You get to play a lot of teams you don’t normally play and I think everybody jumps at that.”
The Easter Classic, which has been running since 1995, is presented by the Adelaide Community Basketball Association (ACBA) and Norwood Basketball Club.
More than 30 clubs will take part in 2022 and the competition will feature age groups from under-12s to under-21s.
ACBA competitions manager Sue Wood said the Classic had become a tradition for Victorian basketballers with interest also growing each year from NSW clubs.
“A lot of the feedback we get from the Melbourne teams is that they’ve been doing it and their families have been doing it for many years,” Wood said.
“It’s very competitive and with some of our great new venues just a short drive from one another it makes for a really good experience.”
Matches begin on Good Friday, before the tournament culminates with Monday’s title deciders.
The Advertiser’s exclusive live stream of 15 grand finals from the Classic will begin at 8am on Easter Monday.
