PREVIEW: SA COUNTRY BASKETBALL TITLES AN OPALS MINING EXPEDITION
While Coober Pedy might stand alone as the opal capital of South Australia, when it comes to the basketball courts, there has been Opals mined all over the state’s regional centres.
Current Australian women’s national team players Steph Talbot (Yorke Valley), Tess Madgen (Barossa) and Cayla George (Eastern Hills) emerged through the ranks of the SA Junior Country Basketball Championships.
This weekend, there will be a chance for the next crop of emerging talents to stake their claim as future stars of the sport.
The Advertiser will continue its exclusive live stream of the SA junior country titles with the under-12 and under-16 competition this weekend.
It follows on from a successful start to the tournament a fortnight ago which involved live coverage of the under-18 and under-14 competitions.
The Advertiser will stream 28 games from three courts on finals day on Sunday, March 27.
SA Country Basketball executive officer Reece Turner praised the performance and attitude of players from the opening half of the tournament. He expected much the same this weekend.
“Overall it was a great standard of basketball, a good representation of country and regional basketball,” Turner said.
“I was particularly impressed with the close results in all of the grand finals, including a shot on the buzzer to win the under-14 division one grand final. It was great on that last day to also have such a spread of winners across multiple regions.
“I think we are looking at a similar spread again this weekend. I think both of the under-16s age groups will be strong - our state teams in that age group are reasonably strong, particularly in the girls.
“We hope that will filter down through each division.
“With these players getting to watch their brothers and sisters play in the under-14s and under-18s titles, there will be a lot of excitement to get on the court.”
