DAY TWO WRAP
Southern Metro has survived a late scare to maintain an unbeaten start to the Division 2 competition at the Sapsasa Girls Cricket Carnival.
North West Country almost turned the tables on their rivals after they posted 99 in the first innings.
While Southern Metro appeared in cruise control at the halfway point, needing only 49 off the final 10 overs, their country rivals began to put the clamps on with regular wickets.
It would take until the final over, and an errant wide delivery, which helped Southern Metro scrape across the line and keep their undefeated streak alive.
The loss capped off a tough day for North West Country, who showed really great signs in their earlier clash at Largs Reserve.
Set a massive total of 111 for victory, the Country girls fell agonisingly short in their run chase, scoring 106 off their 20 overs.
KommunityTV’s exclusive coverage of the Sapsasa Girls Cricket Carnival continues on Thursday, with the final matches from the Division 1 tournament.

DAY ONE WRAP-UP
Eastern Metro kicked off its School Sport SA Girls Sapsasa Cricket Carnival campaign in style with a convincing win over North Eastern Country on Tuesday.
The Division 1 side, led by opening batters Abbey Bayne and Stella Morris-Lennon, as well as tall opening bowler Claire Pointon, was dominant in its win over North Eastern Country.
Eastern set a target of 90 for its opponent after a strong opening innings and followed the batting effort with the ball, bowling North Eastern Country out for 48 in 18 overs.
“We’re pretty happy with the result and it was a good start to the carnival,” coach Nick Holmes said.
“Being in a metro area we’ve been able to get together a bit easier and get to know each other through regular training so it was good to see a few things we’d put into practice come to fruition.
“We got on top of them early and our energy and voice was consistent throughout the match.
“I thought our openers were solid and our bowling attack really stuck to the task and stayed consistent. It was a full team effort.”
In the day’s other Division 1 result at Largs Reserve North, Western Metro topped North Eastern Country, eclipsing its opponent’s 74-run total by 22 runs with six wickets in hand.
Holmes said the day’s action showcased a bunch of young SA women’s talent.
“I’ve been a part of women’s cricket for about 7 years now and I think now it’s really growing and the talent pool is really starting to come through,” he said.
“There’s a lot of talent in each SAPSASA team and with more community clubs now getting women’s teams I think it will only continue to grow.”
The KommunityTV and Advertiser coverage of the Sapsasa Girls Cricket Carnival will continue on Wednesday with another two games from Largs Reserve North.

Girls Carnival Preview: Western Metro ready to defend cricket crown
They were faultless last season in their Division 1 title win, but Western Metro coach John Merrett said it hadn’t played on his mind in the lead up to this year’s Sapsasa Girls Cricket Carnival.
In fact, one of his players had to remind him they’d won the tournament last year.
The Western Metro side, led by a crop of South Australian representatives returning to the pitch, will hunt for their fourth Sapsasa title when they take the field at Largs Reserve on Tuesday.
They will feature in the second match of KommunityTV’s exclusive week-long coverage of the tournament, which includes all matches from the Northern Oval at Largs Oval.
“We had a very good side last year, and we are lucky to have a few of the girls returning for us,” Merrett said.
“Really the girls make my job as a coach very easy.
“There are some very great players in this year’s side, and if they can click and gel early in the tournament, there will plenty of runs scored.
“We have had a few training sessions as a squad which has been good. You need that time to get the players together and build their confidence.”
Three players who helped South Australia to second place at last year’s School Sport Australia National Cricket Championships will return for Metro West including gun wicketkeeper batter Alexandra Heneker.
KommunityTV will exclusively live stream six T20 matches across the week-long tournament, including a mix of Division 1 and Division 2 action.
Western Metro will feature in the afternoon game on the opening day of the coverage when they clash with last year’s runners-up North East Country.
