East Adelaide has produced a spirited run chase to reel in Airport’s sizeable target and take the Sapsasa division one boys cricket title.

Like they have done for most of the week-long tournament, Airport got themselves out of trouble early with the bat to post a competitive score of 139.

East Adelaide started well with the bat but lost their way mid chase. Two wickets in an over with 40 still to get certainly left some frayed nerves, but a sixth-wicket stand of 41 got them home comfortably in the end.

It was East Adelaide’s first title since 2019.

DAY ONE REVIEW

Lower Eyre Peninsula has capped off a perfect start to the Sapsasa Boys Division 1 Cricket Carnival with a cracking run chase against Adelaide South East.

The Peninsula side, who had earlier in the day knocked off reigning champions North Adelaide, set up their chase of 92 perfectly with a dominant 62-run opening stand.

But a mid-innings collapse threatened to cut short their unbeaten start to the tournament, as the side lost four wickets for no runs, including two impressive run-outs, to be left reeling at 4-62.

While Lower Eyre managed to rebuild their run chase, and got within 16 runs with three overs remaining, another pair of run-outs in the 18th over threatened to bring it all undone again.

But in the end it was some power hitting, find the rope twice in the penultimate over to deliver two wins from their opening two games.

Earlier in the day Lower Eyre Peninsula had chased down 88 with ease to secure a five-wicket win over reigning Division 1 champions North Adelaide.

PREVIEW

Defending champions North Adelaide are showcased first up when the Sapsasa Boys Cricket Carnival kicks into gear over three days from Tuesday at Largs Oval North.

North Adelaide took the Division One title in 2022 and have the honour of starting off the LIVE coverage this year with a match up against Lower Eyre Peninsula.

Fresh from covering six games of the successful girls carnival, KommunityTV will showcase five Division One boys games, including the 36-over a side grand final on Thursday.

The competition, which will be played in the T20 format before the grand final, features regional and district representative sides made up of students in Year 5-6.

Day one features a double header, with Lower Eyre Peninsula backing up in the afternoon to face Adelaide South East. Day two starts with the battle between Airport and Southern Heights before what is sure to be an intriguing semifinal.

RELIVE ALL THE ACTION FROM THE GIRLS CARNIVAL

North Adelaide showed their quality last year on the back of some impressive batting displays and suffocating bowling.

They knocked out Torrens River in Round One before beating East Adelaide in a tight semifinal.

Their batsmen found some excellent touch in the decider, piling up 8-165 against Southern Heights before their bowlers restricted their opponents to 102.

School Sport SA school sport officer Daniel Hornhardt said the Sapsasa Cricket Carnival had been a rite of passage for aspiring cricketers across the state.

“It is almost a striving point for young cricketers, it is a chance to represent on a district level beyond their school and local club,” he said.

“This is one of the first representative stages in that school sporting environment, and it means a lot to the kids. The name Sapsasa has certainly been carried on through the generations of kids through the years.”
