Port Augusta women’s outfit has set high standards all weekend to comfortably claim the division one final at the South Australia Country Under-18 Basketball Championships.
Riverland were committed opponents, but crisp ball movement and excellent field structure enabled Port Augusta to build a substantial lead the longer the contest went on.
Port Augusta went to the long break with a 10-point advantage (27-17), and, despite their persistence to match their more favourted rivals, Riverland were simply outclassed in the second half.
The rampaging Devils had winners all over the court and were deservedly rewarded with a 56-22 victory.
GSABA Slammers have taken out a closely fought division one final in the men’s under-18s after getting over the top of Mount Gambier in the dying minutes.
Fiercely contested, Mt Gambier set the pace early on in the thrilling contest and held a slender lead at halftime (37-35).
It wasn’t until late in the third before the Slammers hit the front, taking a two-point lead to the final break.
But when Mt Gambier regrouped to establish a five-point buffer midway through the last it looked like GSABA’s opportunity had escaped them. However, in a stunning turnaround, the Slammers charged home to take the contest 76-74.

The SA Country Basketball under-18 championships have been traditionally played as part of a three-week country championships extravaganza in the middle of autumn.
Now they have been moved to their new timeslot to ease the pressure on families in South Australia.
It has also allowed better access to referees, officials and volunteers, and could even have a flow on effect on the quality of competition, according to SA Country Basketball executive officer Danny Millard.
“We are trying to make it easier on families to not have the burden of travelling twice in three weeks for the ones with children in multiple age groups,” Millard said.
“With the NBL1 starting and all schools competitions starting, it also put a real strain on our referees, volunteers and support staff. We needed to come up with a solution that allowed us to be more efficient with our resources.
“It has made the most sense within the basketball calendar to target this period before Christmas. This gives us more ability to assess the talent in the country regions earlier ahead of the Under-18 nationals period.
“We have had some high performance athletes opt out of the country championships in the past to manage their risk and load with state championships. We want the best kids available to be playing at our championships, and this change allows that.
“From an athlete well being perspective, this makes the most sense.”
While South Australia’s best scouts have been monitoring the country regions all year, Millard said the championships gave an opportunity for players who may not be on the radar to make a name for themselves.
Mount Gambier are expected to be contenders across both the girls and boys top divisions, while Port Augusta will be bringing most of the players from their girls Division 1 championship-winning side from the last tournament back.
