Two brilliant come from behind victories have stolen the show on Court 6 as the Basketball Australia Under-20 & Ivor Burge National Championships quarter-finals heated up on Friday.
New South Wales’ women and Queensland’s men both staged rousing recoveries in the second-half of their respective matches to win through to the semi-finals tomorrow.
Unfortunately for Western Australia, it led in both matches but was not able to hold on.
In the women’s clash, NSW found itself down by 11 points at the main break before point guard Ruby Perkins (22 points) led a resurgence to take a 75-67 victory.
The 190cm tall Kiara Waite was instrumental in keeping WA within reach with 18 points and ever-present point guard Amelia Corasaniti gave her all with 15.
Later on, Queensland’s men found themselves in a similar situation with a 10-point deficit to make up after half-time.
Up stepped Roman Siulepa, the Maroons star kicked into full gear with 35 points in a devastating display.
WA’s Harrison Fitzgerald recorded 30 points of his own in a sharpshooting performance.
Earlier, reigning women’s champions Victoria continued their relentless march towards back-to-back titles with another demolition job the championships.
Undefeated and in ominous touch, the irrepressive Victorians always had the measure of their ACT rivals as they cruised to a 91-56 uwomen’s quarter-final victory.
The Vics simply had too much firepower and, try as they might, the ACT just couldn’t shut down their highly credentialed rivals.
Wodonga product Sienna Harvey was dynamic at both ends of the court and her workrate elite. The classy 179cm guard finished alongside the powerful Manuela Puoch and Kyra Webb with 12 points each, while pocket rocket Tayli Dimarco picked up 11.
