One of South Australia’s hottest basketball prospects believes his SA Metro side is ready for a gold medal push at the U16 nationals in Perth.
Fifteen-year-old South Adelaide Panthers point guard Koby Moir – brother of highly-touted AFL draft prospect Ashton – heads into the week-long championships in strong form and can’t wait to test himself against the best in the country.

Moir, who has represented the state since the U12s level, was dominant at this month’s National Junior Classic and will compete in his second U16 nationals, having already competed at the age of 14 last year.
“I’m more determined to prove myself this time,” Moir said.
“I think I did well last year, but I was up against a lot of big and strong guys as a 14-year-old.
“Being able to come into this tournament with more experience and with more strength physically, I’m looking to really mark my mark.”
Moir has become one of SA’s top young prospects as a floor general at the point guard position, either setting up teammates with smart lobs or dishes, or picking his own spots to shoot and attack the rim.
He said his time with district club South Adelaide, and also coming through the state system, had helped him to develop.
“I think staying at the same club for my whole career, so far, has meant a lot to me, sticking together with the same group for a long time has really helped me to improve, and playing for South Australia has always been an honour,” Moir said.
“I don’t see myself playing any position other than point guard at the moment, I really love being a leader on the court and being part of pressure situations, and I’m always looking for ways to improve, whether that be becoming more of a three-point threat or my decision making.”
While Moir has had the passion to develop his game at his club or for SA, as the younger brother of Glenelg Football Club star and AFL draft prospect Ashton, he has had plenty of motivation at home.
He said his brother – who was also an underage SA representative point guard – remains his biggest inspiration.
“We’re the tightest brothers out there, he’s my best mate and his dedication and skill in sport is something I am always pushed by,” Moir said.
“Our competitive rivalry growing up, and just seeing all the things he’s doing now, has been a massive motivation for me and he’s always working with me behind the scenes.
“He’s my biggest motivator.”
While his brother looks set to spark on the national stage in footy, Koby believed a strong performance by SA at this weekend’s nationals would help him make his own mark.
“We’re trying to win gold, that’s the goal, and we’ve got a really strong team going.
“The team is dedicated and full of size and shooting ability, so I’m confident we can go all the way.”
