10 things we learned in local SA footy this weekend revealed

A reigning Adelaide Footy League premier has turned its season around, marking a four-game winning streak with an upset victory over the league leaders.

Another round of local SA footy action has wrapped up after what was a thrilling weekend of play as some of the state’s biggest stars produced top performances in wet and windy conditions.

From the Adelaide Footy League to the Eyre Peninsula, here are the 10 things we learned from country and suburban competitions.

SAINTS FINDING THEIR MOJO

Goodwood has won its second game in three weeks as it continues to turn its season around in division one, defeating Broadview 10.15 (75) to 5.10 (40).

The result follows the Saints’ narrow loss to an in-form reigning premier in Port District last week and a big win over Old Ignatians in round seven.

2022 Keith Sims OAM Medallist Nick Favretto was at his best for the hosts, dominating the contested ball in tough conditions and also hitting the scoreboard.

The win takes the Saints two games clear of the relegation zone and just two points from the top five.

OLD REDS SEND MAJOR MESSAGE

Top division one side Prince Alfred OC sent its biggest message so far this season to the rest of the competition with a flawless 17.13 (115) to 2.7 (19) win over fifth-placed Tea Tree Gully away from home in wet conditions.

It was a widespread dominant display by Princes in front of goal, with Andrew Bradley, Jayden Davis, Kobe Tozer, Lachy McNamara, Campbell Wildman and Tyson Brazel all kicking multiple goals.

Hayden Jolly was at his best across the backline and in the middle, providing strong tackle pressure and elite ball-use in the conditions, while former Glenelg captain Andrew Bradley was impressive on the ball, also kicking two majors.

RAMS REBOUND FOR IMPORTANT WIN

Glenunga bounced back from its tough loss to Prince Alfred OC last week with a strong 8.9 (57) to 6.6 (42) win over Sacred Heart OC at home in another top five clash of the division one round.

The Rams battled hard in the midfield, with captain Alex Haren as well as big man Abe Davis both producing at a high level in the contest, while Michael McMahon was also influential up front and along the wing.

The win keeps Glenunga in touch with PAOC in the division’s top two, the club trailing Princes by a win and percentage.

KINGS ON A ROLL

Pembroke OS made it four straight wins in division three with a convincing 15.11 (101) to 6.10 (46) victory over league leader Hope Valley at Coopers Stadium.

The Kings opened up a dominant 34-2 lead in the first term and never looked back, with star forwards Mark Evans and Nick Dinham booting three majors each to put the Demons to the sword.

Tough midfielder Max Thring was also at his best, winning the contested footy for his side and dealing to teammates with precision.

The side has re-entered the finals fold after its four wins.

ROOS FINDING THEIR BOUNCE

Morphettville Park has moved to level on points with third placed Plympton in division four, winning a major upset against Hectorville away from home 8.7 (55) to 5.6 (36).

Roos tall Alex Barns was in strong form for his side, dominating in the ruck and up front by creating for his teammates and also booting a major.

Captain Ed Doak was also impressive in the contest, kicking two goals to lead his team to the upset.

The club leapfrogged Hectorville as a result and is now in touch with Kenilworth, CBC OC and Plympton.

LOXTON NORTH TOP OF THE LOT

Loxton North has established itself as the top side in the Riverland Football League this season, defeating Waikerie 11.4 (70) to 5.5 (35) to jump two points clear of the Magpies at the top of the ladder.

Star forward Justin Proud produced a remarkable performance, controlling play in the air and at ground level up front to boot five goals and secure the win for the hosts.

Dylan Eleftheriadis was also influential yet again, adding two goals to his season total of seven from the middle.

MAGPIES SOARING TO STAY UNDEFEATED

Hahndorf registered its most impressive result of the Hills FL season so far on Saturday, defeating second spot Nairne Bremer 9.12 (66) to 3.8 (26) away from home to take its record to 10-0 this year.

Midfielder Adam Trenorden was dominant in the contest, attacking the footy relentlessly and setting up forwards such as Cooper Hough and Zabien Parker-Boars, who four goals combined.

Captain Sam Williams was also strong on the ball, laying multiple tackles and disposing with ease.

The win marks one of the best starts in club history through 10 games for the Magpies and sets the side up for what could be an undefeated minor round.

WILLASTON A FINALS SIDE

Willaston has emerged as a major finals contender in the Barossa Light & Gawler FA, topping fifth spot Gawler Central 18.14 (122) to 9.8 (62) in a one-sided affair.

Star onballer Saxon Evans tallied his fourth best player nod this season with an inspirational performance in the contest, while Lee Sutton (three goals), Nick Lehman (three goals) and Josh Waldhuter (four goals) performed up front.

The win puts the side clear in fourth position and two points from second and third placed Barossa District and Nuriootpa.

CRETTENDEN BACK WITH A BANG

United Yeelanna’s Matt Crettenden returned to play in a big way this weekend after over a month away from the side, booting nine goals in a 24.17 (161) to 3.3 (21) win over Eyre United in the Great Flinders FL.

The key forward picked apart the Saints defence with smart leads and elite finishing and distribution inside 50.

The nine-goal haul remarkably took his season total so far to 31 from just three games following a 13-goal performance against Eyre United in round one and a 10-goal performance against Cummins Ramblers in round two.

TIGERS OFF THE MARK

Yankalilla achieved its first win of the season in round 10 of the Great Southern FL, defeating Goolwa/Port Elliot by 14 points at home.

Star mid James Hargreaves was at the top of his game for the Tigers as they ran away 6.10 (46) to 4.8 (32) winners, holding the Magpies goalless in the opening term.

The win means both sides are now equal on points at the bottom of the ladder.
