PREVIEW
Millicent’s brightest young women’s stars are ready to shine at this year’s SA Junior Country Basketball Championships.
The championships have featured teams from SA country’s top basketball regions including Yorke Valley, Strathalbyn, Great Southern, Millicent, Riverland, Barossa and Port Augusta.
After winning their quarterfinal emphatically on Sunday, Millicent face Great Southern in the semifinal. The victor will play either Strathalbyn or Riverland in the decider.
“The girls are all fit at the moment, which is a big bonus, and they’re keen to see what they’re capable of against the best opposition,” Millicent U16 girls coach Darren Dean said.
“We’re confident against the opposition and we’ve had some really good hit-outs recently but we also know that if we have any slip ups opposition will make us pay.”
Millicent will be led by Emily Denton at centre and Belle Coghlan, who excels as a guard.
With both players having experience for SA Country, Denton backed them to lead their team by example.
“They’re our two main stars, they drive our performances,” he said.
“We’re very much a team which has a defence-first mentality and then we can control the boards through Emily and back our guards to lead the way in terms of offence and scoring.”
While the side will be aiming to go all the way this month, Denton maintained developing each player would be the main goal of the tournament.
“We want to win games but we also want to develop the girls and put them on that elite pathway,” he said.
“Our program over here, a lot of our girls play senior basketball and then go on to play in the Country Basketball League, so we want to make sure we can give as many players that opportunity as possible.”
