PREVIEW: CROWS COP BLOW AHEAD OF SANFL SHOWDOWN

Adelaide has been dealt a major injury blow on the eve of the SANFL season, with star recruit Nathan Freeman expected to be sidelined for a month.

The former Collingwood and St Kilda AFL midfielder hurt his right AC joint in the dying stages of last week’s trial game against Port Adelaide, ruling him out of Friday’s 4.10pm premiership season opener against the Magpies at Adelaide Oval.

The SANFL Showdown will be live streamed by The Advertiser as part of our season-long deal to bring readers the best of the league every weekend.

Crows SANFL coach Michael Godden said the speedy Freeman appears to have avoided surgery, which would have meant a long stint on the sidelines, but would still miss about a month of football.

“He copped a pretty nasty injury but it looks like he won’t need surgery, which is a great result given we initially weren’t quite sure how serious it was and were concerned it could be the season,’’ Godden said.

“We're thinking it will now be in that month range (out) but it’s still disappointing to lose such a good player because apart from being a fine footballer he gives us that senior leadership player on the field to help and guide the younger ones.’’

Freeman, 26, was one of the SANFL’s star summer signings.

While a key part of the Crows’ state league squad, he is on Adelaide’s AFL Covid Contingency List and had hoped to perform well enough in the first half of the season to push for selection in the AFL mid-season rookie draft.

He was hurt after falling awkwardly in a tackle against Port.

The Crows thumped Port by 63 points in the trial at Alberton Oval but Godden expects Matthew Lokan’s side to provide much stiffer opposition in the SANFL Showdown, which will be played as the curtain-raiser to the 7.50pm AFL Showdown.

“You have to temper the trial game result a little bit but the reality is that we played the brand of footy that we wanted to play and that’s the most important thing,’’ Godden said.

Lokan did not read too much into last week’s result and said he expected Port’s SANFL team to benefit from the recruiting of a handful of SANFL-contracted players with previous league experience.

“We certainly think we have added to our contract list this year, with Anthony Wilson (from Norwood), Brayden Kirk (North Adelaide) and Nick Moore and Jackson Lee (Woodville-West Torrens) all having played league footy for other clubs,’’ he said.

“They should certainly help us perform better while Trent Burgoyne is also back at the club after losing his spot on our AFL list.’’

Adelaide and Port will open a SANFL season for the first time in a “Showdown’’ and Lokan described the occasion as “super exciting’’.

“For our SANFL contracted boys and young (AFL) guys to play at Adelaide Oval on a big night is great for our clubs,’’ he said.

Boom West Adelaide recruit Hamish Hartlett will also miss round one with a calf injury while Covid has already impacted the SANFL, with potential 2022 No. 1 AFL draft pick Harry Lemmey - a key forward from the Bloods - among the players to miss the start of the season because of health and safety protocols.

The Tiser’s coverage of the SANFL opening round will also include live streams of the Sturt v West Adelaide Under-16 clash and Central District v South Adelaide Under-18 clash on Saturday.
