PREVIEW: OLYMPIC TALENT EYEING STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
South Australian Olympian Matt Clarke says the reaching the Tokyo Games has given him confidence to take his running to another level in 2022.
The 26-year-old steeplechaser will be one of the headline acts at next week’s State Track and Field Championships – live streamed by The Advertiser – from February 18-20.
Clarke qualified for the 3000m steeplechase and ran 14th in his heat at Tokyo but, rather than feel the pressure that comes with the title of Olympian, said the experience had only helped to push his goals further.
“If anything it’s given me extra confidence,” Clarke said.
“Since making the Olympics my training has gone to another level and I think I’ve seen it as a stepping stone in my running career.
“I’m excited more than anything to start race better runners, especially over distances which aren’t my specialty to test myself as an overall athlete.”
Clarke will race the 5000m at this Saturday’s Adelaide Invitational before choosing whether to tackle the 3000m steeple or 1500m at the state championships the following weekend.
It’s all part of a plan with Team Tempo coach Adam Didyk for Clarke to progress as a more well-rounded runner as he eyes the World Championships and Commonwealth Games this year.
The Victorian-born athlete also said his bold call to cross the border in 2019 had paid off and he now called SA home.
Clarke believed the depth and quality of running in Adelaide was only improved and hoped it would be on show at the State Track and Field Championships.
“We’re definitely getting to a level now where we’re attracting good runners to come and race us, which is pretty exciting,” he said.
After live streaming the championships for the first time in 2021, The Advertiser’s 2022 broadcast will feature every track event and select field events live.
Phil Herden will host the coverage, with rotating co-commentators throughout the event from Mile End.
