Rising South Australian sprinting sensation Aidan Murphy didn’t know how good he really was growing up, according to his mother.

And she – two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Tania Van Heer – would know.

Between them they hold a staggering 12 SA sprinting records and now Murphy hopes he can add another to the family collection at this weekend’s State Track and Field Championships.

For the second year running, The Advertiser has partnered with Athletics SA to exclusively live stream the premier event over three days of action from February 18-20.

Murphy, who holds state 200m records in under-20, under-18 and under-16 categories as well as the open and under-20 100m, will be aiming to claim the open 200m title.

He’s come close to breaking the mark held for 41 years by former Australian champion Bruce Frayne, running 20.62s to set a new 200m under-20 record last month.

Murphy, 18, has experienced a meteoric rise in recent years but one Van Heer saw coming.

Described as “gangly” in his early days, she said she spotted glimpses of his talent as a junior in surf life saving events.

“It’s only been in the last 12 months he’s started to believe in his own athletic ability,” Van Heer said.

“Prior to that he used to dismiss it and it was a good thing in a way, he didn’t know how good he was.

“As a parent, I’m stoked and the same as any mum seeing their child doing so well after working so hard.”

Murphy, who is coached by 1976 Olympic sprinter Peter Fitzgerald, said the lighthearted rivalry between mother and son helped to push him harder.

“She makes sure to let me know she’s got seven … it’s a bit banter between us that goes on every now and then,” he said.

“I’ve been pulling out some great times, training has been going really well, I’m in good shape and should hopefully do a PB (at the championships).

“I’ve had 10 months of injury-free training, which has been insane, because I’ve had injuries plaguing me since 2017. It’s finally allowed me to put up some good times.”

Murphy posted a strong 20.66s to win the 200m at the Adelaide Invitational on Saturday, beating out Queensland’s Jack Doran (20.91s).

After live streaming the State Track and Field Championships for the first time in 2021, The Advertiser’s 2022 broadcast will feature every track event and select field events live.

The championships – featuring rising stars, Olympians, accomplished veterans and para athletes – will begin at the SA Athletics Stadium on Friday with all the action and commentary on advertiser.com.au from 6.30pm.
