Sam Kerr’s club have taken aim at social media trolls after her baby announcement was overshadowed in ugly scenes.

Sam Kerr’s club Chelsea have condemned the ugly comments directed at the star striker and her partner, Kristie Mewis, in the wake of their baby announcement.

Kerr revealed the heartwarming news on Monday that Mewis was pregnant, posting a series of black and white snaps that showed the engaged couple kissing and holding ultrasound photos.

“Mewis-Kerr baby coming 2025!” the post read.

The joyous announcement however was overshadowed by a barrage of ugly comments with users making “disgusting” homophobic comments across social media platforms.

Chelsea have now hit out, condemning the hateful comments being directed towards the couple.

“Chelsea Football Club is aware of recent unacceptable and hateful homophobic comments published across various social media platforms,” a statement read.

“There is no place in society for any form of discrimination and we will not accept any abuse directed towards our players, staff or supporters.

“We are extremely proud to be a diverse, inclusive club that celebrates and welcomes people from all cultures, communities and identities.”

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor showed her support for Kerr and slammed the “unacceptable” comments in this day and age.

“I just want to support Sam, fully support her. These comments are unacceptable, especially in our world in 2024,” Bompastor said.

“It’s crazy to understand how people can react like this. We’re so happy for Sam. I can’t wait to welcome this little baby into our Chelsea family.”

Chelsea Pride, a LGBTQ+ community support group for Chelsea fans, posted a lengthy statement on social media, condemning the reaction.

“Homophobia has no place in football, at Chelsea, or in our society,” the organisation said.

“It’s heartbreaking and infuriating to see social media flooded with hateful comments when we should be celebrating love, pride, and unity.

“Over the weekend and today, our club was forced to shut down comments and even delete posts, posts that should have been shining moments of joy, from the powerful symbolism of Rainbow Laces to the incredible news that Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis will welcome a child in 2025.

“No to Hate isn’t just a slogan; it’s a battle cry. It’s a reminder that we must keep fighting for what is right, for true acceptance, and for a game that embraces everyone without exception. We refuse to stand by in silence.

“At Chelsea Pride, we stand against every act of homophobia with unwavering strength and passion. We fight for a football world where every player, fan and family can live openly and be celebrated, without fear or prejudice.

“This is our game, our club and our unwavering commitment: Hate will never win here. We will always stand for love, unity and an inclusive future for football.”

Kerr has played her entire career facing similar comments.

She had a miserable start to her 2024 with a serious knee injury forcing her to withdraw from the Matilda’s disastrous Olympics campaign.

Kerr and Mewis announced their engagement last November, two months after rumours initially swirled about the move.

The pair kept it quiet, playing a game with fans as they refused to confirm the news until Mewis broke the couple’s silence on November 9 in an exclusive interview with People Magazine.

Kerr and Mewis went public with their relationship in 2021 after the Tokyo Olympics and since then the power couple have regularly shared snaps together.
