Skipper Jake Lehmann says history shows Sydney suits South Australia in the JLT Cup.

SOUTH Australian captain Jake Lehmann could not be happier about facing Queensland in Sydney where his Redbacks have enjoyed great success with a better than 50 percent strike rate.

SOUTH Australian skipper Jake Lehmann says history shows moving the JLT Cup roadshow suits his men entering Tuesday’s clash against Queensland at Hurstville Oval.

The Redbacks have won 11 of 17 games in Sydney and three of four at Hurstville since the domestic one-day format changed in 2014-15.

Adam Zampa’s leg-spin on spin friendly strips backed by the change-ups of former Test duo Chadd Sayers and Joe Mennie should embolden Lehmann’s attack at Hurstville then against Tasmania at Bankstown on Thursday.

“We have had some great success in Sydney. Some of our bowlers come into the game there, Zamps especially, Joey and Chadd,” said Lehmann.

“We are always attacking the stumps and looking to take wickets, Sydney is a great place for us to play cricket.

Western Australia humbled South Australia by five wickets at the WACA on Saturday night but Lehmann’s men recorded a bonus-point triumph against New South Wales in the tournament opener last Thursday.

Captaincy agrees with Lehmann who blazed a career-high 87 against the Blues and there is no shortage of belief taking on Chris Lynn’s Bulls.

“I am enjoying the added responsibility in terms of winning games for my state and stand up,” said Lehmann, leading South Australia in the absence of Test batsman Travis Head.

“We have a great bunch of blokes. They are willing to try anything to win and sacrifice to get a wicket or runs.”

Lehmann said WA - powered by pace quartet Nathan Coulter-Nile (3/46), Andrew Tye (3/49), Joel Paris and Jhye Richardson - was formidable at home. SA lacked the match-winner it enjoyed with Jake Weatherald’s unbeaten ton (106) against the Blues.

“We just really needed to get that big partnership because we knew 240 wasn’t going to be enough. At the WACA you need wickets at the back end of the innings,” said Lehmann with keeper-batsman Alex Carey top scoring with 58.

“Alex Carey was the one that got away and we needed him to keep going and play with that freedom and that is how you get 300. Credit to them, they had great bowlers throughout.”

Opener Weatherald’s boom and bust run in the west continued with a duck against the Warriors preceding his fourth century in 15 one-day innings against the Blues. Weatherald, claimed by Coulter-Nile, failed to score in his first three first-class innings at the WACA before blasting tons in both innings against the Warriors last November.

Lehmann predicts left-hander Weatherald will be the next Redback to earn national selection.

“We picked him as the one to stand out this year and we saw that in the first game. He is an amazing talent and if he does get picked is ready to go,” said Lehmann.
