Will Pucovski is set for an immediate switch to the commentary box with Channel 7 keen to secure his services for the coming summer.

Advised to retire by a panel of medical experts due to the impacts of concussion, the one-time Test star won’t be lost to cricket and a career in broadcasting awaits.

Pucovski is highly regarded at Channel 7 both on and off the air having appeared in commentary during one of his previous breaks from playing, a move which at the time raised eyebrows within Victorian cricket.

The 27-year-old did not appear on Seven last summer due to the ongoing complications he was suffering with his health and also to avoid any potential angst while on his state contract.

However, now he has officially retired from cricket, there are no restrictions on his availability and Pucovski will be able to throw himself into commentary and TV analysis if that’s what he decides to do.

Sources at Seven have confirmed the network will be seeking to make him a permanent part of their on-air roster and see him as a key part of their Big Bash coverage due to his connection with the younger audience as a contemporary player.

Pucovski is also interested in a future in coaching having taken a job to coach his Melbourne club team next summer.

The articulate star gave a heartbreaking account of why he had made the call to quit cricket in an exclusive interview with Gerard Whateley on SEN earlier this week.

“I felt so bad immediately after being hit in a physical sense (by Meredith) … and the dread probably came a bit later,” he told Whateley.

“Riley is one of the fastest bowlers and it got me in a bad spot. I was struggling to get anything done. Even just walking around the house was a struggle.

“My fiancé wasn’t happy because I could not contribute to any of the chores. I was sleeping a lot.

“I have spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to find answers. I have seen a heap of experts … but unfortunately it has got to the stage where I am still suffering and don’t really have the answers.

“Mental health is one part of it – that is related to the concussion stuff. I suffer from fatigue.

“One bizarre thing is I struggle with things on my left side. I am 27 and hopefully I have a good life ahead of me.”

Pucovski has hired a lawyer and is exploring the possibility of legal action, with Cricket Victoria confirming no compensation settlement is in discussion ahead of his contract expiring in June.
