A Cairns sporting organisation that aims to improve life outcomes by promoting healthy and active lifestyles is fast becoming one of the largest in Far North Queensland.
Phoenix Sports and Culture Club has entered more than 40 teams into local sporting leagues over the past 12 months, with junior and senior sides competing in basketball, AFL 9s, touch football, Oztag and netball competitions.
“We as a club do community engagement activities – netball, basketball, Oztag – in a few of the local parks around Cairns, where anyone’s invited to come down, have a run or have a shot,” said PSCC president Andrew Moke.

“We thought we’d start nice and small with just a few teams, but as we started doing a lot of these programs, we saw a lot of interest from a lot of different places and we’ve just grown so fast.”
The club will enter nine teams into the upcoming Cairns Netball season across multiple divisions, and runs up to 30 local basketball teams.
“Our hope and goal is that all of the people that come to our association stay involved and active in their sports,” Moke said.

“We believe sport is a vehicle to success in life and it’s our goal to keep the community involved and engaged.”
Moke said PSCC was built on inclusiveness.
“It doesn’t matter where you are from or what background you are, we bring everyone together and become family.”
