Stingers skipper wants to repay club with premiership

Apara Brewster-O’Brien says leading Trinity Stingers to a Cairns Hockey Association premiership would be the ultimate way to repay the club that’s given him so much.

Apara Brewster-O’Brien says leading Trinity Stingers to a Cairns Hockey Association premiership would be the ultimate way to repay the club that’s given him so much.

The Northern Territory product, who earned under-18 and under-21 state representative honours, said Trinity Stingers Hockey Club had been his “second home” since he moved from Darwin to Cairns four years ago.

“I moved over in 2016 and joined the club straight away,” he said.

“It’s just a really nice, positive, social club and they’ve really helped me out a lot over the last few years while I’ve been finding my feet in Cairns.”

The 27-year-old, who took over the captaincy duties from player-coach Rohan Sparks last season, said he was eager to build on his first season at the helm when CHA’s 2020 Winter Season resumed later this month.

“We certainly want to win, but I think the main focus is getting the boys together again and having some fun in this unusual year,” he said.

“We were building on a strong team camaraderie in those first two games and the start of the season was looking really good with training and how we bonded together.

“We’ll just keep focusing on having a positive mentality and working together as a team.”

The second-year skipper said he was looking forward to be able to get back into contact training with his teammates this week as the season draws nearer.

“It will be good to run some more scenarios with tackling to get some more game fitness under our belts while we train, compared to just hitting and trapping balls,” he said.

“The focus will be on keeping possession and not allowing any of those quick turnovers.”

Sparks said Brewster-O’Brien was a natural fit to captain the club.

“He’s a guy that probably leads more with his actions than with his words,” he said.

“I don’t need him to be overly boisterous — we’ve got other guys that can do that — I just want him to lead by example in what he does, both on the field and at training.

“He’ll play a full game each week and without a doubt top the kilometres covered by our players.”

Stingers were defeated by defending premiers Souths 2-1 and Saints 2-0 in the opening rounds of the season before it had to be suspended due to the coronavirus.
